Spencer Pigot Takes Winterfest Championship as Rising Star Racing Focus Moves to St. Pete

It was ‘mission accomplished’ for Rising Star Racing driver Spencer Pigot, who opened the 2014 racing season by posting a championship-winning performance in the Cooper Tires Pro Mazda Winterfest.

Fellow Rising Star Racing pilot Neil Alberico kept his focus on progress during the four-race championship, rebounding from a frustrating start with mechanical frustrations in the opening event at NOLA Motorsports Park to take two fifth place finishes at Barber Motorsports Park for Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing.

Pigot scored two wins and two pole positions for his team Juncos Racing in the four-round pre-season championship to secure the Winterfest Championship. The Cooper Tires Pro Mazda Winterfest Championship saw two race events at NOLA Motorsports Park followed by two more rounds at Barber Motorsports Park.

"The Cooper Tires Winterfest has been great. I worked really well with the team and they did an awesome job all week,’ said Pigot. “We won two races, were fastest every session on track and took every pole position so we can't be disappointed with that. Hopefully, we can keep this momentum going and keep the car up at the front in the main season. We will still be working hard to improve as we head into St. Petersburg, but I can't thank them enough for all of their hard work this week."

Following Winterfest, Alberico is positive about the Pro Mazda season-opening event at St. Pete which is just about one month away.

"Winterfest was a successful week overall,” said Alberico. “As a team we overcame some mechanical frustrations to make great progress in developing this entirely new Pro Mazda car. St. Pete is home to the Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor racing guys, so I like to think we have a home field advantage going into the first race. As a team we will approach every race with the same mind-set and work together to perform to the best of our ability. Two top-five finishes early on in the development process with the car is promising and we just have to continue to make progress and we should be looking forward to a really exciting season! Big thanks to all the guys at Rising Star Racing for all their support and hard work to make this season possible."

The season-opening Firestone Grand Prix of St. Pete will mark the opening rounds of competition not only for the Pro Mazda Championship, but also for the 2014 IndyCar Series championship campaign.

Senior Rising Star Racing driver Josef Newgarden will look to bring the big momentum from the productive off-season testing to the first race of the year with Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing. The 1.8-mile, 14-turn St. Pete circuit incorporates streets of downtown St. Petersburg and a section of runway of Albert Whitted Airport, and Pro Mazda is set to take the green flag on Saturday, March 29 at 10:00 AM ET.
