Indianapolis Proves Tough Yet Beneficial For GEICO Honda 450SX Riders

A fast weekend in Indianapolis left GEICO Honda 450SX riders happy yet wanting more following the Monster Energy Supercross Series event held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

After only a handful of races on a 450SX motorcycle, Eli Tomac brought home his first podium finish of the season with a second-place effort in tonight's main event.

"It's good to finally get a podium," Tomac said. "You just really had to stay on your toes on all 20 laps of this race because of all the ruts in the course. It would make some of the best guys in the world look like they weren't all that good, at least that's how it felt to me."

Not only did this weekend's podium finish come with new hardware for the GEICO Honda rider's wall, but it also featured a learning curve that was long overdue.

"For me it was a better day all the way around," Tomac said. "My season has been pretty rough starting out with a big crash leaving me injured in my very first race. Since then I have just been building and building, trying to get more comfortable on the motorcycle. I realized that I haven't really been riding like Eli Tomac would. I'm coming out of my shell a little bit."

After a fast start to the weekend, 450SX teammate Wil Hahn thought a victory was in his near future and that Indianapolis was the place it was going to happen. Even though a tough course jeopardized that win and landed him with an 11th-place finish, Hahn is still looking at the bright things of tonight's outcome.

"It really was an awesome day even if the finish doesn't really reflect it," Hahn said. "I was fast from the beginning, all day and every run. The main feature started off good, but I just dumped the bike about five laps in. I fell over and it took me a while to get my bike started back up. I had to charge back through the field to get the finishing spot I ended up with.

"I'm just frustrated about falling during the main event. I really felt like I deserved to be on the podium tonight. However, I am happy with my progress, with a faster than usual weekend for myself."

Tomac and Hahn look to bring the knowledge they gained this weekend and apply it to the tour's next stop, March 8, in Daytona Beach, Fla.
