Walker Says Winter Weather Will Be A Huge Factor At Bassmaster Southern Open #2

Even though spring is right around the corner, winter weather looks to play a huge factor when Elite angler David Walker competes in the Bassmaster Southern Open #2 this weekend, March 6-8, on Lewis Smith Lake.

"With this weekend's forecast calling for cold rain, a part of this tournament is going to be managing to stay dry and warm enough to where you can still be competitive," Walker said. "It's a factor you can't really control."

The Cabela's/GEICO For Your Boat pro angler finished strong at the 44th annual GEICO Bassmaster Classic, which was contested about 30 miles away, but conditions are not even close to comparable between the two bodies of water.

"Lewis Smith Lake is very close to where we just had the GEICO Bassmaster Classic but it's nothing like that lake," Walker said. "It's a highland reservoir where there is a lot of really steep rocky banks and it's a much deeper lake. Aside from this, the wakes are going to be much smaller. Plus, it's a smaller body of water to fish in.

"Fish here have a tendency to hang out much deeper than they do in other lakes we compete at. Here, most of the fish being caught throughout the weekend will be in 20-, 30-foot deep water."

Walker and the rest of the anglers competing in the second Southern Open of the season will all be battling the elements when they launch at 7 a.m. from Lewis Smith Lake Dam each day with weigh-in at 2 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 3:30 p.m. Saturday at a local Bass Pro Shop.

"This isn't a lake known for big stringers but there's a lot of fish in it, mostly spotted bass," Walker said. "I think it's going to be one of those events where it's going to be a tight battle to the end. There's going to be a lot of people weighing in really close to what everyone else has.

"It's going to be a matter of which guy can catch one or two bigger kicker fish that will really separate them from the rest of the pack. I think a guy who can catch 12 pounds a day is going to be much closer to the top 10 in the standings. You could only be a couple pounds out of first at weigh-in but yet still be in 30th place overall.

"We've been practicing hard the last several days, and I have some spots mapped out. I'm ready to get started."
