Walker Rebounds At Bassmaster Southern Open #2 After Difficult Start

What started out as a rough weekend ended well for Elite angler David Walker, who rallied back to leave the Bassmaster Southern Open #2 at Lewis Smith Lake with a check in hand.

Irregular weather mired the Cabela's/GEICO For Your Boat pro angler deep in the standings heading into Saturday's launch. With everyone so close in weight, Walker snagged a catch that propelled him higher than he would have imagined the day before.

"Overall things went as I expected," Walker said. "The wakes on the top end, by the leaders, were a little surprising in height. I was kind of guessing what it would take to finish in the money, and after yesterday I was a little anxious about my chances.

"I caught one fish, nearly a 6-pounder, which was going to be the deciding moment for me in the tournament. It's amazing how one cast out of all the casts you make in a week can really make or break you. For me, when I landed that big fish today I knew that it was going to be important because this event was all about that one big fish. And for that one fish to be even bigger than average this weekend, it helped me move up almost 50 places on the leaderboard."

Weather was a huge factor in the tournament for all the anglers this weekend. With a quick change in weather, Walker was more than prepared compared to his competitors.

"Today's weather was the complete opposite from Thursday," Walker said. "We didn't have any wind, not a single cloud, and it was sunny. In fact, we were all under the impression that there was going to be a fog delay. Fortunately there wasn't a delay because I was the first boat to launch, giving me a shorter day to fish.

"For me, the change in weather really helped me pinpoint where I wanted to fish. Fish have a tendency to roam around a bit more when there are low-light conditions, such as in the early morning or when there are overcast skies later on, but when there is bright sunlight the trick is to get around objects or where there is a shaded area. The fish are so cold that they want to get in the sun.

"That's exactly what I did today, looked for bright banks with shaded nearby objects. It helped me cover more water, where yesterday I kept casting around because I really didn't know which place was best."

Even though Walker was hoping to make the final cut to be able to fish on Sunday, he still isn't completely disappointed in his overall effort.

"You always want to do better, but it's nice to make that move forward instead of going in the opposite direction," Walker said. "I'm happy with today's finish, not ecstatic, but it's a good feeling anytime you finish in the money. You just have to keep catching those fish, move on to the next one, and hope you are in contention again."
