Burton Racing Looking to Build on Positive Results in Sebring

Indianapolis-based Burton Racing is looking forward to continuing their solid start to the season when the championship team is back in IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge (CTSC) action next weekend for the Sebring 200 at Sebring International Raceway.

The 2014 CTSC season is the longest in the series’ history with 12 race dates, and every round will mark critical steps toward being in position to close the year out on top when the championship is settled at Road Atlanta in October.

After a double top-10 result of sixth and seventh at the season-opening BMW Performance 200 at Daytona International Speedway in January, Burton Racing is prepared to execute their championship strategy and build on that positive result.

For the 2.5-hour Sebring event, 2013 Champions Terry Borcheller and Mike LaMarra will again share the driving duties of the No. 23 BMW Automotive Chemicals/Excelda BMW 128i while Greg Strolzoff and Connor Bloum will pair in the sister No. 22 Gold Eagle BMW 128i.

“Sebring is such a historic track,” said LaMarra of the circuit. “So it will be fun to get there for the event and see how the race goes.”

While the event marks the first-ever appearance for the CTCS at Sebring, LaMarra will have a highly experienced co-driver to lean on as Borcheller took a class victory in the Sebring 12 Hour in 2001 and has raced a very large range of GT equipment on the bumpy circuit.

The team participated in testing at Sebring’s historic 3.74-mile circuit at the end of February and left the test with valuable information to put to good use during the race.

“It was great to get out of the snow for a few days and test last month at Sebring,” said team owner Keith Burton, who once lived in Sebring as a young mechanic at the Skip Barber Racing School. “We got a lot of laps in at the test and it was really productive. The track is really rough, and the surfaces change a lot through the day so it is a big challenge for the drivers as well as for the engineers in terms of finding the right balance. But the BMW 128i is a great platform, and we just want to build on what we accomplished in Daytona with two more solid finishes.”

Notably, next weekend’s race at Sebring International Raceway will mark Bloum’s first-ever race at the track. In fact, prior to testing he had never before even run on the track outside of a simulator. But his co-driver Strelzoff has experience as well as enthusiasm for the central Florida facility.

“I love driving on this track, the history is awesome,” said Greg Strelzoff after testing. “This is definitely a place with a lot of character. There is a very fine line between going too fast and too slow here. You really have to drive accurately here and stay on line. This track also changes a lot and from the first test session to the next session there were major changes in the track. But I really like the challenges of this track and I was able to dramatically improve my lap times from session to session in testing, so I’m really excited for the race.”
