2014 USCR (Sebring 12): RSR Racing Returns to Sebring with High Expectation


The East Lansing, Michigan based RSR Racing team heads back to the Sunshine State to take part in the 62nd Annual Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring fueled by Fresh from Florida. The team's twin Oreca FLM-09 Prototype Challenge racecars join sixty-six other TUDOR United Sports Car Challenge entries in the largest field in over a quarter century of the historic event.

Bruno Junqueira and Duncan Ende in the 09 LinospressoUSA.com FLM-09 and Chris Cumming and Alex Tagliani in the 08 AutoMaxUSA.com FLM-09 will be rejoined by their endurance teammates David Heinemeier Hansson and Rust Mitchell to confront the former Army Air Base for the once around the clock event.

Building upon the speed and performance of the Chevrolet powered Prototype Challenge racecars in the season's first and longest event on the high-banks of Daytona International Speedway, the team spent last Saturday testing at Sebring International Raceway. The strength of the private test session on the 17-turn 3.74-mile racetrack sets the expectation high for winning this weekend's endurance event.

Junqueira captured the pole in the team's first outing in the Prototype Challenge class at the famed event in 2012. Junqueira, Ende, Mitchell, Cumming and Hansson all have experience on the historic racetrack including Cumming and Hansson finishing on the podium in 2013. Tagliani took advantage of the test session to formularize himself with the track characteristics to prepare for this weekends event.

"It was good to be back in the car. Last years set up wasn't good and he had to work hard to improve the car. We finished the day with a solid car and it was nice to do some practice at night."

Duncan Ende on winning at Sebring

"While Daytona is the king of American endurance racing, Sebring has always been the race I have most wanted to win. I came close in 2011 finishing 2nd in class, but haven't brought home the big hardware yet. We have a really good lineup this year and I think we have as good a shot as anyone in the PC field. Hopefully we got all of our bad luck out of the way at Daytona for quite a while."

Chris Cumming on rebounding from Daytona

"I'm motivated to get back to Sebring to get the season going again. Daytona didn't go the way we wanted so Sebring gives us the opportunity to show what we can do. We've got a great team and we're ready to go."

Alex Tagliani on testing at Sebring

"Testing was pretty important, I think the team was use to certain set-up and car characteristics with of the old tires. The Continental tires are creating some different characteristic to the car and having a chance to test was very beneficial for our understanding to evolve to a better set-up for the rest of the year.

"It was great to work with Bruno, Jeff and John on dialing the car down for what we're going to need in the up coming race. Sebring is a difficult track. Depending on the temperature, the way the car starts is not the way the car will handle in the afternoon heat, and definitely not the way it's going to handle at the end of the race at night with the cooler temperature. Hopefully we'll be there at the end with a shot to win. That's what we're racing for."

David Heinemeier Hansson on competing at Sebring

"The 12 hours of Sebring is my second-favorite race, after the 24 hours of Le Mans. I just love the track and the atmosphere of the event. It's probably also the track I've driven the most in competition in my short driving career. It's just a unique track, and a great time. There's nothing like flying around in the car over the bumps in turn 17 or holding on for your dear life through the blind turn 1 at night. Real magic.

"Last year I competed in LMPC as well with a 3rd place finish to show for it. And if it hadn't been for a wheel lost, we would have been right there in the fight for the win. So I'm eager to settle score from then and from the bad luck we had in the RSR car at Daytona. We have the right car, the right team, and the right line-up to win this class at Sebring."

Rusty Mitchell on returning to RSR Racing for Sebring

"I'm very excited heading to Sebring knowing we had the speed to win at Daytona but just ran into some bad luck. I very much look forward to getting back in the car and working with my teammates Alex and Chris along with everyone at RSR in Sebring. If we put everything together right on race day I have no doubt we will be standing on the top of the podium at the end."

"The time on the track was very productive with both cars running in the 1:55 lap time range. We were able to test a number of setups and learned a great deal going into the race weekend."
