2014 NHRA: Spencer Massey NHRA Gatornationals Event Preview

The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series heads southeast this week for the 45th annual NHRA Gatornationals in Gainesville, Fla.

And Spencer Massey couldn't be more excited. The prestigious Gatornationals event sits high on the list of "must have Wally trophies" for Spencer and the Battery Extender Powered by Schumacher team.

"There are places on the NHRA tour that in your mind you know are very important and this is one of them," Spencer said. "Everyone knows how big a win at the Gatornationals is. Even when I was little I remember watching and talking about the Gators. It's always been a big race. I don't have a win there yet and that's what we're looking for this weekend."

The Battery Extender dragster team has a semifinal finish at the 2014 NHRA season opener in Pomona, Calif., and a quarterfinal finish at the second race near Phoenix two weeks ago. Spencer raced to the semifinals last year in Gainesville but has never reached the final round in Florida.

"That would probably be our goal this weekend. We haven't been to a final round yet this season and I think reaching it at the Gators would be a good place to start. This race is the first on the east coast and really after this race our season really gets going. It would be good to get some momentum going after this race and early into the season."

The weather forecast is also in Spencer's mind. Friday's forecast temperatures in the 60s could bode well for the 10,000-horsepower Battery Extender dragster.

"Gainesville has always been great for horsepower," he said. "There's a ton of trees around the track that put more oxygen in the air and with cooler temperatures on Friday we're really looking forward to seeing what kind of numbers we can produce. It's going to be fun."

The following are Massey's statistics and points standings for the Gatornationals.
