2014 NHRA: Work Continues For Lucas Oil's Morgan In Gainesville

The work never ends for Lucas Oil Pro Stock driver Larry Morgan and his race team.

Since the most recent race on the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule, Morgan and his small team have been busy preparing for the NHRA Gatornationals this weekend at Auto-Plus Raceway at Gainesville. That includes testing in Bradenton, Fla., with several other Pro Stock teams.

"We've been thrashing," Morgan said. "We got a lot of engine stuff done, and I tried a lot of carburetor stuff in Bradenton, things we haven't had a chance to do this year."

Testing is key to improvement for Morgan, whose team isn't as large as many of the Pro Stock powerhouses. Most of Morgan's time is spent simply getting to the next race, but the test in Bradenton allowed him to focus on research and development of his Lucas Oil Ford.

"We tested at Bradenton because that's where everybody wants to go," Morgan said. "We went down there and tried to do some stuff."

Weather in Florida has been good, and conditions in Gainesville should allow for some fast elapsed times. Morgan welcomes the conditions, as he simply likes going as fast as possible.

"I don't know how fast it will be," Morgan said. "It's going to be good weather, and Friday might be even cooler. I'm ready for it."

Gainesville is a hotbed for Pro Stock, with one of the largest contingents of factory hot rod fans in the North Central Florida region.

"There are a whole lot of Pro Stock fans in that area," Morgan said. "It's a good place to go. I've been to the final there a couple of times, and I've had a good time there."

Morgan reached the final in 2003 and 1997 and hopes to get there again this time.

Plus, Morgan continues his campaign to win the fan vote for the K&N Horsepower Challenge, with special "Add the Old Man" decals available for fans. Information on how to vote Morgan into the Challenge can be found at www.addtheoldman.com.

"We'll try to move forward, to get the old man in the K&N Horsepower Challenge," Morgan said with a laugh.

Qualifying sessions for the NHRA Gatornationals will be held at noon and 2:15 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Eliminations kick off at noon, Sunday. ESPN2 will air the qualifying show at 1 a.m. EDT on Sunday and the eliminations show at 7 p.m.
