Shell Premieres Engine Documentary 'Horse Power'

With a number of new Formula One technical regulations, including the notable reintroduction of the turbo-charged V6 engine, 2014 is the most eagerly anticipated season in the modern era of the sport. With reliability and energy efficiency being key talking points, the fuels and lubricants used in Formula One will be at the centre of the technical spotlight.

To mark these momentous changes, Shell decided to produce the ‘Horse Power’ documentary to highlight the collaboration between Shell and Scuderia Ferrari in preparing for the upcoming season.

After the exclusive screening, Alonso and Räikkönen discussed the new regulations before demonstrating the importance of Shell’s role in Scuderia Ferrari’s 2014 preparations with a unique cycling event. The new teammates jumped on personalised bicycles to power Carrera slot cars around a miniature race track, illustrating the changes in efficiency and energy recovery in the new 2014 power unit.

Richard Bracewell, Shell Global Sponsorships Manager, said, “Since 2011, when the new rules were announced, we have been working side by side with the Scuderia Ferrari engineers to develop the fuel and lubricants needed to meet the demands of the new V6 engine.

‘Horse Power’ features never-before-seen footage of the inner workings of the Maranello factory and Shell laboratories and presents a unique opportunity for us to share with the world how closely we work with Scuderia Ferrari. It is a chance to meet the people and see the passion behind the racing, highlighting our relationship and aspirations for the year ahead.”

Over the past 60 years, Shell’s Technical Partnership with Scuderia Ferrari has been one of the most successful in Formula One history. They have contested more than half of the Formula One races ever run and amassed 12 Drivers’ Championships and 10 Constructors’ Championships. The partnership provides Shell with an invaluable test bed for the development of its Shell V-Power fuels and Shell Helix Ultra lubricants and any learnings gained on the track are transferred directly to Shell’s road-going products.
