2014 Bristol: Roush Fenway NASCAR Sprint Cup Race Preview

Roush Fenway Looks To Turn Up the Heat at “Thunder Valley”
After two weeks out west, Roush Fenway Racing (RFR) rolls into the hills of eastern Tennessee where it will look for its 18th and 19th victories at the fast and furious half-mile of Bristol Motor Speedway. Historically one of RFR’s most successful venues, the team will look to return to victory lane at ‘Thunder Valley’ for the first time since 2009.

By the Numbers
Bristol Motor Speedway ranks in the top five of virtually every category for RFR in Sprint Cup competition. Roush Fenway’s 10 Cup wins at Bristol are the second most that the organization has at any track and the 11 poles are four more than RFR has at any other track. All in all, RFR has turned over 85,000 laps in Cup action at BMS and over 106,000 in NASCAR competition.

100,000 Laps and Counting
RFR reached 100,000 laps of NASCAR action at Bristol a year ago. The team has completed over 50,000 miles of racing, while leading over 5,000 laps in 276 starts in 26 years of NASCAR action at Bristol.

Winning Bristol Style
Roush Fenway has won in all three of NASCAR’s major divisions at BMS, including 10 wins in the Cup Series. In addition, RFR has five wins at Bristol in the Nationwide Series. Overall RFR has won at Bristol 17 times in NASCAR competition, with six different drivers.

King of the Road
Carl Edwards is one of only three drivers in NASCAR history to have won in all three of NASCAR’s major divisions at Bristol. Mark Martin accomplished the feat as well, with each of his wins coming in an RFR entry. Edwards is one of only four drivers to accomplish the career sweep at any NASCAR track.

Runner Up
Roush Fenway’s history at BMS began on April 10, 1988 with the No. 6 Cup car almost winning RFR’s first race at the track and finishing second. Since that time, in addition to the organization’s 10 Cup wins at the track, RFR cars have finished second at BMS on 13 occasions (5 Cup, 4 NNS, 4 Truck), including Edwards last season (Cup). RFR has finished top two in Bristol 30 times in the past 25 seasons.

Hot Streaks
Roush Fenway’s history at Bristol has been that of hot streaks. RFR swept the track in 2003 and put a Cup car in victory lane at Bristol at least once in every season from 2002-2008. In addition, RFR has sent an entry to victory lane at Bristol in nine of the last 13 years.

2014 Roush Fenway Lineup
RFR features six NASCAR teams in 2014. Greg Biffle, Carl Edwards and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. will make up the Roush Fenway Sprint Cup lineup, while Trevor Bayne will anchor rookies Chris Buescher and Ryan Reed in the Nationwide Series.

Bayne Looks for Points Lead at ‘Home Track’
Trevor Bayne moves into the weekend trailing the NNS points lead by only three markers. Bayne will look to take the points lead at his ‘Home Track,’ of Bristol, having grown up in Knoxville, Tenn., which is located just over 100 miles southwest of the .75-mile short track.

Dueling Rookies
Buescher and Reed will battle it out this season for what would be RFR’s NASCAR record extending 14th rookie of the year award. Stenhouse brought home RFR’s 13th award last season, taking NASCAR Sprint Cup rookie of the year honors. Five different RFR drivers have won the rookie award in the Nationwide Series, including all three of RFR’s current Sprint Cup drivers. Buescher scored his first top-10 finish of the season last week in Las Vegas, while Reed turned in a solid 15th-place finish.

Buescher Looks for Strong Follow-Up
Buescher will make his second career start at Bristol Motor Speedway, where a year ago he earned a career high seventh-place finish in his first trip to the famed short track.
