Walker Has Impressive First Day At Dick Cepek Tires Bassmaster Elite Series Event

In a day that started off rough for Elite angler David Walker, the tides turned in the late going of day one to land him in the top 10 of the Dick Cepek Tires Bassmaster Elite Series presented by Hardee's event on Lake Seminole.

"It started off as a pretty slow day, to be perfectly honest," Walker said. "I wasn't feeling too good about it. Every place I went, I really didn't catch anything. It was real cold and a lot of the places I was trying to fish the wind was blowing hard, which kept me from being able to really fish how I wanted. I just kept moving around until I finally got in an area where I felt like I could settle down and fish slow and it worked out."

At the end of the day, the Cabela's/GEICO For Your Boat pro angler was able to rebound, catching a full limit of five fish and weighing in at 21 pounds, 4 ounces and landing near the top of the leaderboard in seventh place.

"Within my last half-hour to fish before weigh-in, I caught that 7-pound, 4-ounce fish that was really the highlight of the day," Walker said. "That fish moved me up from having an average-size stringer to one that was over the 20-pound mark. That one cast made the whole event because big fish can really change the whole dynamic. When you lose it or when you catch it, it can really set the tone for you for the rest of the event."

Even though today was a success for Walker, he has already started creating a plan of attack for tomorrow to be just as great.

"I can sit here and say what I'm planning to do tomorrow," Walker said, "but just like today you do need to be able to think on your feet. When I got in areas that I could see really weren't working for me, instead of just staying and tying on the vine, I was able to move around and adjust. Obviously, I'm going to go back to those areas, but if they don't pan out for me, I know I'm going to hopefully be smart enough to keep moving and find some new places to fish."

In addition to his large catch, Walker has more to be proud of. Before heading in for the day, he helped out a fellow pro angler that was caught stranded nearby in a broken boat.

"This lake has got a lot of standing timbers and stumps in the water," Walker said. "I noticed another angler fishing near me had hit one bad enough that it bent the prop shaft on his motor. He was still able to fish but was unable to go anywhere. Since we were about 20 miles away, I told him he could ride back with me when I headed back in for weigh-in. In the end everything worked out for the best."

Fishing continues tomorrow for Walker and the rest of the Bassmaster Elite Series anglers with launch times at 7:30 a.m. from Earle May Boat Basin and weigh-in at 4 p.m.
