McClelland gains valuable experience on Lake Seminole

Pro angler Mike McClelland learned a valuable lesson on fishing your own instincts after rebounding on the second day of the Dick Cepek Tires Bassmaster Elite Series presented by Hardee's event Friday at Lake Seminole.

After an initial day of fishing Thursday that didn't end like the Cabela's/GEICO For Your Boat Elite angler wanted, McClelland rallied in the late going to try make the best of the situation.

"You always hear the saying, 'You can't win a tournament the first day, but you can lose one,' " McClelland said. "Basically what I was trying to do yesterday was not lose, but I ended up fishing a little too conservative. I had a couple areas that I felt really good about, and I just didn't fish them appropriately.

"After you get so far behind the eight ball, you kind of just have to go with the flow and fish your instincts. That's exactly what I did today, and in turn I ended up having a really good day."

McClelland knows fishing at Lake Seminole really fit his style, even if his results didn't reflect it. However, nothing is going to keep the pro angler down; he is already preparing himself for the next event.

"Honestly, the conditions should have worked more into my favor then they did," McClelland said. "I'm not a big-time sight fisherman, and there was going to be a lot of fish caught on beds this week had the conditions not done what they did.

"It was just one of those deals where I made some poor decisions yesterday and had to correct them today. Really, the conditions were as good as they could have been for me to fish more my strengths than allow the guys who are really good sight fisherman blow this tournament away. All I can do is keep my head up and look forward to the next tournament."

McClelland has his sights set on next weekend when he and the rest of the Elite Series anglers compete in the Bassmaster Elite Series event at St. John's River in Palatka, Fla.
