2014 Australian GP: Formula One F1 Race Results - Rosberg, Mercedes Win!

By PaddockTalk.com Staff Writers

Mercedes Formula One F1 driver Nico Rosberg has scored a dominant win at the season opening 2014 Australian Grand Prix. For Rosberg, it it his first win of the 2014 season - 12th podium - and fourth victory of his Formula One F1 career. It was also Rosberg's first win at Albert Park, and first win since the 2013 British Grand Prix.

For Mercedes, its was the team's first victory of the year, and 14th all-time as a constructor.

Rosberg made a great start, and took the lead from Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) the third starting position on the grid. Daniel Ricciardo started second, and also was able to overtake Hamilton on ahead of turn one.

Australian Daniel Ricciardo and his No. 3 Red Bull would pick up his first career podium in his 51st Grand Prix. The home crowd was very pleased with the result cheering him on and each turn during his final laps.

Another first time podium would go to McLaren driver Kevin Magnussen in his Formula One F1 debut, he finished third.

Veterans Jenson Button (McLaren) and Fernando Alonso (Ferrari) would finish fourth and fifth respectively. McLaren now leads the constructors standings.

The safety car was deployed on lap 12 after Valtteri Bottas and his No. 77 Williams made contact with the wall and lost his right-rear tyre. It was the 12th time in six races over the last 11 years. Bottas would recover to finish sixth, providing Williams more points - 8 - in the opening Grand Prix than the team scored in the entire 2013 season.

Felipe Massa (Williams) and Kamui Kobayashi (Caterham) both failed to survive the first turn of the first race of the season after making contact and ending their days in the gravel. It was a huge disappointment for a Williams team that have shown great progress during the off-season. Kobayashi would accept full responsibility for the accident. The Stewards will decide after the race if a further penalty will be required.

Four-time Formula One F1 World Champion Sebastian Vettel had won nine consecutive Grand Prix heading into the race, but five laps in he was done. The German reported losing power early and was forced to retire because of the engine problems.

Another former world champion Lewis Hamilton retired on lap four with Hamilton reporting he was driving on five cylinders - of six. Last season, the engines had eight cylinders.

Overall, there were eight retirements, and although many prognosticators predicated many more, the list was similar to previous years.

Next up, the Formula One F1 series will race at the 2014 Malaysian Grand Prix in two weeks.
