2014 NHRA: Ron Capps NHRA Gatornationals Qualifying Results: No. 6

NAPA AUTO PARTS Funny Car veteran Ron Capps and crew chief Rahn Tobler know very well how you never know how much power a track will hold until you hit the throttle.

That was reinforced after two days of qualifying for the 45th annual NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville, Fla.

And Capps, who is qualified No. 6 for Sunday's championship eliminations, anticipates it won't get any easier during trophy runs that begin at 11 a.m. (EDT).

"Obviously the track got very tricky today, and a couple oildowns didn't help," he said of Saturday when his NAPA Dodge Charger R/T posted subpar times. "It is funny how these weekends develop when one day one lane tends to be a little better on Friday and then on Saturday it changes in a heartbeat."

He expects it to change again Sunday with partly cloudy skies are forecast for the first time during the event.

"We know we'll see more cloud cover on Sunday, but Tobler is magical about going down those types of tracks.

The NAPA Dodge performed best on Friday when its run in 4.121 seconds (302.14 mph) was second quickest in the late afternoon session and ranked fourth best heading to Saturday.

"The delays for oildowns brought temperatures down for the last session, and I didn't know if our time (4.121) would hold up. I thought someone would outrun that and I hoped it was our car."

Ron is going for his third Gatornationals title and fourth championship round appearance.
