2014 NHRA: Tony Schumacher NHRA Gatornationals Qualifying Results: No. 7

The time is now for seven-time Top Fuel world champion Tony Schumacher and the U.S. Army team of Don Schumacher Racing, and the team made good strides in qualifying seventh for Sunday's NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville, Fla.

After losing in the first and second rounds of the Mello Yello Drag Racing Series first two events this season, Tony believes crew chief Mike Green and assistant Neal Strausbaugh have found the formula the U.S. Army team has been looking for.

Tony opened qualifying Friday with a time of 3.816 seconds (316.97 mph) and closed out qualifying Saturday his second best effort of the of the weekend, a 3.839 at 323.19.

"We're going in the right direction," said Tony, who has won four titles at Gainesville in seven championship rounds. "We have what we need now and we'll keep refining it. We're not going to change to a different tune-up, and we should be able now to just adjust it for the racetrack.

"This track is a little different than what we tested on (near Phoenix) two weeks ago. We're getting it. It's going down the track and that's what we need.

"There is only one way to win and that's having a car that goes faster than anyone else on a consistent basis. You can't go down the track two out of 10 times. You have to average getting down the track six out of seven times. Every now and then you might smoke the tires, and then you just hope the car in the other lane does to."

Tony, who will open Sunday's championship eliminations against Leah Pritchett, needs to win rounds.

"You can't lose in the first round, and that also hurts because you won't get enough runs under your belt to keep collecting important data.

"We just want to win the race; be ice cold in the car and be a machine."

No. 1 Qualifier: Shawn Langdon (Al-Anabi Racing), 3.776 sec., 325.37 mph

TONY SCHUMACHER, U.S. Army Top Fuel Dragster
