2014 NHRA: Spencer Massey NHRA Gatornationals Qualifying Results: No. 11

Sometimes it takes small victories to reach the big ones and that's what Spencer Massey and the Battery Extender Powered by Schumacher Top Fuel dragster team accomplished during qualifying for the 45th annual NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway.

After two rounds of qualifying on Friday, Spencer's dragster was unable to make a full pass and was not in the top-12 and went into Saturday's first session not qualified.

During Saturday's first NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Top Fuel session, the Battery Extender dragster posted a 3.861-second pass at 320 mph to not only get them solidly in the 16-car field, but the elapsed time was good enough to earn them a bonus point for being third best of the session.

"That was a small victory for this team," Spencer said. "We went out there in the heat and made a good, solid qualifying lap that we can build on. Because of that run, we are able to adjust some things and we'll have some great data to roll into with on race day."

The Battery Extender dragster led by Phil Shuler and Todd Okuhara qualified No. 11 and will race Bob Vandergriff in the opening round of Gatornationals eliminations on Sunday at 11 a.m. (EDT).

"You know, we were sitting in the staging lanes earlier today and we heard NHRA announcer Alan Reinhart talking about Pro Stock racer Jeg Coughlin and how he's won from every qualifying position and me and the guys got to talking about that," Spencer said. "That's a pretty impressive stat.

"That's NHRA drag racing for you. When you're in the show on Sunday, anything can happen. And we're in.

"It's definitely a tricky racetrack that's been throwing not only us but everyone for a loop. We do have some data to go off and we'll be fine for race day. It's a big race day and we want that Gatornationals Wally trophy."
