FIA World Rally Championship (WRC)
WRC stars compete in spectacular “city rally” in Helsinki

There’s quite a treat in store for the fans ahead of Rally Finland from 1 to 3 August 2014: a road race in the heart of Helsinki. The “Rally Helsinki Battle” on 26 July will feature not only current WRC drivers, but also one-time stars of the Finnish rallying scene, including legendary drivers such as Juha Kankkunen, Tommi Mäkinen, Marcus Grönholm and Markku Alén.

Volkswagen Motorsport will be represented by Sébastien Ogier and “local hero” Jari-Matti Latvala in their Polo R WRCs. Volkswagen Motorsport Director Jost Capito was instantly taken with the idea: “What better way to attract a wider audience to this sport than with a rallying event in the heart of the capital? We liked the organisers’ concept straight away. We’re looking forward to the ‘Helsinki Battle’ because the rally stars will provide the fans a great show.”

Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup
Young generation of Touring Car drivers are getting in shape for the new season

The new Volkswagen Scirocco R Cup season gets underway on 2 May. To ensure that the opener at the Hockenheimring is a complete success, 20 Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup drivers have been making their final physical preparations at a fitness camp in Oberjoch, Bavaria. An eclectic regimen consisting of cross-country skiing, weight training, mountain running, climbing, spinning, Pilates and nutritional science, kept the participants on their toes for five days. Instructors include mountain running world champion Helmut Schießl and Le Mans winner Manuel Reuter. The former DTM driver will be on hand this season to offer help and advice to the Touring Car talents in the Scirocco R-Cup – and he took full part in the fitness training as a keen amateur triathlete. The Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup 2014 season is made up of six race weekends. The final will take place in Hockenheim on 19 October.

South African Rally Championship
Strong season debut for Volkswagen Sasolracing in Tour Natal

The first round of the South African Rally Championship season produced the first podium finish for the Volkswagen Sasolracing team. Hans Weijs jr. (NL) and Björn Degandt (B) claimed third place in Tour Natal in their Volkswagen Polo S2000. Their team-mates Henk Lategan/Pierre Arries (ZA/ZA) finished the season opener in fifth place. “It feels good claiming a podium in this event, we are on a good level and think we will be pushing from stage one at the next rally”, said Weijs jr. The winners of the rally were Leeroy Poulter/Elvéne Coetzee (Toyota).
