Alexander Rossi, Caterham Racing driver in GP2 and Caterham F1 Team Reserve Driver, is very ready for a championship fight in 2014. GP2 pre-season test got underway in the warm climate of Abu Dhabi and without usual European weather disruptions. The drivers took full advantage of this testing opportunity, running multiple programs and Pirelli tire compounds.

On Day 1, the morning session proved fruitful with EQ8 Caterham Racing driver, Alexander Rossi trading fastest laps and ending the session in P2. In the afternoon the team and Rossi completed their test schedule and full run program, trying different set-ups to understand the Pirelli tire, obtaining vital data for the season ahead.

Day 2 opened well despite a rather unsettled session, halted by four red flags, Alexander never dropped outside the top ten throughout the morning. The afternoon of Day Two was about long race run simulations and further analysis the Pirelli tyres. This was especially good during the mid afternoon heat wave. The team was very pleased with their overall race pace and achieved their engineering objectives, feeding back their thoughts and providing a clear comparison on the differing set-ups they had trialled throughout the day.

The final day's running began in less than optimal conditions and on a very sandy track. Alexander was able to run both the prime and option tyre in the day's sessions. The team leave the initial test very pleased with race pace and preparation for Championship fight, but believe there is still more to find from their qualifying pace. Team spirits are very high as they leave for Bahrain test next and having completed 353 laps with both cars in the first test.

Alexander Rossi “Our first day was a very good test for the team. We came here with a long test program list of set ups to trial. This is always a fine balance and challenging to manage the limit and window of the Pirelli tire.

From the first morning session we immediately saw that we had really good pace and from this we can take away a lot of positive gains. This was again confirmed during the second day, which we again showed good pace again and a competitive car, so the focus turned to fine tuning and truly testing rather than chasing times. We were able to understand the medium Pirelli tyres even more during the afternoon of the second day following the long distance stints.

Overall this has been a very successful three days and has given us lots to think about as we move to Bahrain next week. Performance runs on the option tyre were the main focus of the final morning session and I think we did a pretty good job, but there is still more to find in our qualifying pace. We had some questions about optimising the super-soft tyre going into the session and we gained a lot from those two sets.

For the final afternoon we continued race simulation. I am very pleased with our race pace and our ability to manage tyre wear and degradation. Our pace was very strong way we were able to adapt and manage the tyre wear effectively. This gives us some confidence in one of our weaker areas we worked hard to improve last season. I believe by the end of the Bahrain test we will right at the sharp end in both qualifying and race pace.”
