2014 NHRA: Spencer Massey NHRA Gatornationals Event Results: Second Round

Spencer Massey was on his game Sunday at the 45th annual NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway.

In the opening round of Sunday's championship eliminations, Massey used a .042-second reaction time and a 3.876-second elapsed time for the opening-round win over Bob Vandergriff.

In the second round Massey, who is known for his lightning-quick reaction times, used a .041-second jump on the starting line against Morgan Lucas. But then the Battery Extender dragster slowed on the run and clocked an uncharacteristic 3.933-second pass at 314 mph to end Spencer's day.

"We're not really sure exactly what happened yet," Spencer said after the second round. "It's nitro racing, sometimes things just don't go according to plan and that's what happened this afternoon.

"Todd (Okuhara) and Phil (Shuler) were plugging away at it with this car and it was really coming around," he said of the Battery Extender crew chiefs. "We're going to take a good look at everything and make sure we find the issue.

"But as a driver, to bring the ET slips back to the pit and see two .04-second reaction times, that's pretty cool. That's why I love drag racing. I do everything I can out here to help out the team and getting a starting line advantage is a huge deal as a driver. I had a good day, the car had a good weekend.

"We go to Vegas in two weeks and the plan is to get the driver and the car on the same page and go out there and win some rounds."
