2014 NHRA: Jack Beckman NHRA Gatornationals Event Results: Second Round

The data notebook for the Sandvik Coromant/Valvoline Dodge Charger R/T is getting thicker each weekend for Jack Beckman and crew chief Rob Flynn.

Flynn, along with assistant Terry Snyder, started the season with little data and has made great gains in only three NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series events in 2014.

Jack's Sandvik Coromant Dodge Charger R/T qualified No. 3, their best start of the season, with a 4.108-second lap and improved on that time in the first round of Sunday's championship eliminations with a winning 4.080-second pass.

Then the team was paired against Don Schumacher Racing teammate Ron Capps and a malfunction ended their day early at the Gatornationals.

"Our CO2 bottle leaked and was empty," said Jack. "CO2, which is basically pressurized air, controls our entire management system; ignition timing, clutch application, fuel flow. Without it, the car will go to 50 feet and as soon as you're supposed to see ignition retard and clutch application, it never sees anything.

"We were kind of doomed. It's a very frustrating way to lose."

But there is a bright side to match the yellow and red Sandvik scheme, and that is that Flynn, in his first season with DSR, and company are making good runs.

"The upside is, we know exactly what it was and we will do everything in our power to make sure it never happens again," Jack said. "We made a bunch more good runs this weekend. I think with this team the only thing we're lacking is runs and data, and we're going to get that over the next few races."
