2014 NHRA: Goodyear, NHRA Sportsmen at Gators

They won races driving cars with wildly different tire applications, but they had one thing in common: Both raced on Goodyear Eagles.

Duane Shields and Steve Ambrose each won his category at the NHRA Amalie Gatornationals, taking wins in the NHRA’s Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series for sportsman racers, taking different approaches.

The wins gave Goodyear five for the weekend. No tiremaker won more. In addition, Goodyear-shod racers were in the final round of three more categories.

Shields, of Boulder City, Nev., was credited with two wins in Top Alcohol Dragster over the weekend. He defeated another Goodyear-shod car, driven by Bill Reichert, in the semifinals to be credited with winning a regional race that was not finished a week earlier due to weather.

The TAD cars are the fastest and most powerful racers in the Lucas Oil Series. The vehicles look like Top Fuel cars and Shields’ car had more than looks in common with the Top Fuel series. Shields raced on Goodyear’s D2681 tire, the one manufactured in Akron, Ohio for use by the Top Fuel teams.

“We’ve been scuffing with the Top Fuel guys,” Shields explained. “We made the commitment to stay with that tire and tune the chassis to it.”

Obviously, the plan worked. Beating Reichert, Shields said, was a big step toward taking home the Gatornationals trophy.

Ambrose, racing in Competition Eliminator, won the Gatornationals for the second time. His roadster generates roughly 700 horsepower. The Goodyear tires Ambrose had on the rear axle had more than 200 passes down the quarter mile drag strip. He has won 10 national events.

Ambrose, Woodhaven, Mich., said, “The tires are right for the application. I’ve been using them for years.”

Goodyear employs about 69,000 people at manufacturing plants and facilities in 22 nations. Based in Akron, Ohio, Goodyear is among the largest tiremakers in the world and is the worldwide leader in race tire innovation.
