2014 NHRA: Goodyear, NHRA Pros at Gators

Allen Johnson says his racecar is not as good as it will be later this season.

Hum.

Johnson’s new Dodge Dart won the Pro Stock category in its first race, winning the NHRA Amalie Gatornationals at Auto Plus Raceway at Gainesville.

Johnson was one of five drivers to win at Gainesville with Goodyear tires. The other Goodyear-equipped winners included Doug Kalitta (in Top Fuel) and Robert Hight (Funny Car) in the Mello Yello Drag Racing Series for professional teams and Duane Shields (Top Alcohol Dragster) and Steve Ambrose (Competition Eliminator) in the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series for sportsman teams.
Johnson won the previous race in a different car, and then brought the new one to the Gatornationals.

“We’re not quite there yet,” Johnson said of his new car. “So to win when we’re not quite there yet, look out.”

Johnson leads the Pro Stock championship standings with 282 points. V. Gaines is next with 244.

Driving for John Force, Hight said he was surprised to win the Funny Car final.

“If you would have told me this morning that John and I would have been in the finals, I would have taken that bet,” Hight said. Hight might not be the best odds maker in drag racing. All three Force Funny Cars advanced to the semifinal round.

Force retained his lead in the Funny Car standings with 316 points. Hight is next with 273.

Kalitta leads the Top Fuel title hunt with 309 points. Antron Brown is second with 256.

“We’ve been trying to get a win all year,” Kalitta said. “We’ve been right on the cusp.”

Goodyear employs about 69,000 people at manufacturing plants and facilities in 22 nations. Based in Akron, Ohio, Goodyear is among the largest tiremakers in the world and is the worldwide leader in race tire innovation.
