Triple Eight Unveil Exciting 2014 MG6 GT BTCC Challenger And Livery

Jason Plato and Sam Tordoff proudly unveiled the 2014 MG KX Clubcard Fuel Save BTCC Team livery earlier today at the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship Media Day at Donington Park. The drivers along with Triple Eight Race Engineering Team Principal Ian Harrison provided fans with the first glimpse of the revised MG6 GT that will contest the highly anticipated 2014 season, before taking to the track to take part in the rain affected official test session.

While the overall look and feel of the 2014 car is incredibly similar to the challenger that took two-time Champion Plato to third place and rookie Tordoff to sixth in the overall 2013 standings, subtle changes have been made to improve overall aerodynamics of the saloon. Leaning on the significant experience within the Triple Eight Race Engineering squad, positive steps have been made ahead of the first race of the season in just under a fortnight on the Brands Hatch Indy circuit in Kent.

"We've had a productive winter refining the MG6 and quickly realised where there were gains to be had," commented Harrison at the launch. "When you try to make a competitive car better, there is a danger you can go too far in one direction, but the team has used the latest technology to model and calculate potential changes to performance and we're confident we've made a step change in performance on the car you saw in the final round of 2013. We’ve also spent time understanding the new Dunlop tyre, working out how we can get the most from it and what the car needs to do to maximise its efficiency in qualifying and in race conditions. I think we’re in a great position for the season ahead.”

This year also sees a change to the team name and the new MG KX Clubcard Fuel Save title is a reflection of Tesco’s new nation-wide Clubcard Fuel Save scheme launched last week. The positively received reward scheme allows Tesco customers to get money off fuel, just by shopping and scanning their Tesco Clubcard. With around one in five Brits now forced to cut back on food just to afford to run their vehicle, this is Tesco’s way of helping.

The 2014 BTCC season represents the third year that Triple Eight has campaigned the mighty MG6 GT, and with nine victories last season (six in 2013), the team is optimistic that the 2014 variant will again provide Plato and Tordoff with a race-winning machine with which they can challenge for overall Championship honours.

Further Quotes

Jason Plato – Driver, #99
“We've done two years of this project now, we're starting the third and we're better prepared than we ever have been. We've got genuine manufactured developments coming through now, which we've never had before and in the past we've spent time in the off season trying to understand the car, but we have that information now and we also have a good wet setup too, which had previously been a big achilles heel for us. We were a bit unlucky last year, but the mindset this year is very different. All of that gives us real confidence ahead of this season and as a team we're a more organised and in the best position we've been to challenge for the title."

Sam Tordoff – Driver, #88
“I’m excited to get back into the car, I feel a lot better than I did last year and that’s down to having the experience of a season in BTCC now under my belt. Last year we reached our objectives a lot quicker than we thought we would, the win certainly caused me to reassess my objectives and this year I want to be fighting at the front, challenging for podiums and ultimately wins. I’ve realised that consistency is key and I’ll be going all out to finish every race in the points and that should allow the challenge for the title to build itself. I’ve got no excuses; I have a fantastic team, car and team-mate, and we’ve improved over the winter. I think we’ll be really strong again this season."

Matthew Cheyne - Head of Marketing, MG Motor UK Ltd
“We are very excited for the season ahead and share the confidence of the rest of the team that, in 2014, the 888 race engineered MG6 GT can go from being a serious contender to a BTCC Champion for both the team overall and one of the individual drivers be that Jason Plato or Sam Tordoff. With the huge crowds at the circuits and the fantastic coverage on ITV, the BTCC continues to be a key part of our promotional programme for the MG6 and we look forward to another successful year.”

John Tordoff - Chief Executive, JCT600
“For JCT600 the BTCC is a high profile national championship that raises our exposure up and down the country. We’ve been involved in motorsport going back thirty or more years and to now be able to support a Tordoff in motor racing is super; it’s just been great to see him do so well. Sam now has a year of BTCC behind him and he knows what is expected, so if he can do a bit better than last year we’ll be chuffed to bits.”
