Walker Ready To Continue Success At Second Bassmaster Elite Series Event

Bassmaster Elite Series angler David Walker earned a comfortable top-20 spot in the Angler of the Year standings with a stellar opening weekend in southern Georgia. Now, the decorated pro is eyeing an upward move in the rankings by hauling in some more big stringers during this weekend's Bassmaster Elite Series event on St. Johns River.

When his Cabela's/GEICO For Your Boat Ranger hits the water Thursday morning, Walker will be taking all the necessary measures to ensure his success continues. This includes a few things he hasn't done yet in the small handful of Open and Elite tournaments he has fished.

"For the first time this year, I'm going to be putting on some sunblock because it's supposed to be sunny and 78 degrees with no wind every day," Walker said. " This is going to be strange but good. I'm happy to pack up my winter gear.

"The nice weather, I'm sure, will cause the wakes to go up and there will be a lot of fish caught. There is going to be a lot of bed fishing the entire weekend, and I believe there's a good chance to see a giant stringer caught in a river system that is known for some really big bass."

Indeed, St. Johns River is notorious for producing some of the largest bass the series has ever seen. Aside from that, the time of season falls when the fish will be the most vulnerable to sight anglers.

"The fish are spawning, so they already have their little areas staked out and have them guarded," Walker said. "When it's sunny and slick like that, it makes it easy to see those fish guarding their areas and you can slip your lures right to them. Sometimes, though, you have to make repeated casts to bring them out and strike."

Walker already has his territory staked out before he launches with the rest of the Elite anglers at 7:30 a.m. from Palatka's Riverfront Park. Weigh-in will resume at the same location every day at 4 p.m.

"We normally cover a lot of water, what we call 'running and gunning,' trying to fish a lot of different areas and cover them more quickly," Walker said. "But here you need to go to an area and be much more methodical.

"I'm going to spend more time in a few select areas that I have already picked out for this weekend. I only have about three areas I really feel comfortable with, so I might fish all three spots or I may just go to one in the morning and end up staying there all day."
