McClelland Focused On Fishing At His Own Pace On St Johns River

With the Bassmaster Elite Series moving further south this weekend, pro angler Mike McClelland hopes warmer weather will bring him better results at the Bassmaster Elite Series event on St. Johns River.

The Cabela's/GEICO For Your Boat star knows conditions should be just right this weekend to potentially bring in some heavy bass and big stringers. However, he won't let that thought affect his mentality of how he approaches the tournament.

"Essentially, my strategy on St. Johns River is going to be to fish to my strengths," McClelland said. "Sight fishing isn't my favorite way to catch, so I'm going to stay away from it if I can. Even though I know this is a place where sight fishing is big, I'm going to go out there and fish how I want to fish and hope it works.

"If I catch five decent fish pretty quickly, then I can spend the rest of my afternoons looking for the bigger ones out there that will help me move up the leaderboard. I'd like to be fishing all four days this weekend. I'm ready."

McClelland also feels like the winter weather has finally moved on and won't factor into his results.

"I'm excited that it looks like we're going to have good weather for the first time all season," McClelland said. "The weather is going to warm up just perfectly for the start of this tournament, and everything looks to be favorable for a good weekend of fishing. I think the nice weather is going to make this a pretty interesting event for everyone. I know we're all pretty tired of fishing with heavy jackets on."

Although weather forecasts look favorable, McClelland and the rest of the Elite anglers know they'll have another issue to contend with when they launch at 7:30 a.m. from Palatka's Riverfront Park each day.

"There's no doubt that the full moon will have all of the fish rushing towards the banks," McClelland said. "Because of that, I think there's going to be a lot more fish caught at this week's event than what we saw last week. Between the warmer water and the full moon, they're going to be active.

"I don't know weight-wise how it is going to compare because of the mass amount of fishermen congregating in the same type of area. It might just come down to the luck of the bait."
