After Strong Start, Elite Pro Walker Aiming For Top Finish In Palatka

For the second Bassmaster Elite Series event in a row, Cabela's/GEICO For Your Boat angler David Walker easily made the initial cut and will continue fishing into the weekend.

With a Day 2 stringer of five fish weighing 20 pounds, 1 ounce, Walker jumped up to 17th place among the 108 anglers fishing on the St. Johns River. His two-day total now stands at 34 pounds, 8 ounces.

"The day didn't start off too well when I tried to change areas and abandoned my primary fishing spot," Walker said. "I wasn't (in the new spot) for very long before I said to myself, 'I've got to go back.' When I got back to my initial spot, there was one other boat there and he ended up catching 28 pounds today. Obviously, I left the door open and the wrong dog came home.

"So I had a bit of a slow start and the day turned into a bit of a grind. I really didn't catch a lot of fish until after lunchtime; then it really starting clicking for me."

Although he made a mistake early, it ended up working out well for the way he was fishing.

"There are areas in the lake where the water is crystal clear and you can see the fish early on," Walker said. "But where I was fishing you have to get the sunlight high and the wind slick to see them. At that point the fish become much easier to see, but up until that point you're just kind of hoping."

Walker is ready to try it all again from the area he knows best when he launches at 7:30 a.m. from Palatka's Riverfront Park.

"The area I fished had a couple of other boats just around the corner," Walker said. "Thursday we all had mediocre bags while Friday we all had 20-pound bags. Obviously that means that my fishing place got better Friday than it was on Thursday. That's the good news; there is more fish in the water than we thought."

As always, Walker's primary goal for the tournament was to make the first cut, which he has accomplished. Now he has his eye on the next step: Fighting for a top-12 slot and advancing to Sunday's final round.

"My goal was to make the top-50 cut Friday, like we did last weekend, and then see what I could do after that," Walker said. "I landed right in the middle of it, and I'm solidly in the field now, even within striking distance of the leaders. I can't ask for anything more than that. Having the chance to move on and keep fishing is what is really important now."
