Warmer Weather Brings Better Results For McClelland On St. Johns River

After a slow start to his season, pro angler Mike McClelland is leaving the Bassmaster Elite Series event on St. Johns River in Palatka with a check in hand and a smile on his face.

By bringing in a stringer of 10 pounds, 12 ounces on Saturday, the Cabela's/GEICO For Your Boat Elite angler finished 36th overall. His total weight of 43 pounds, 7 ounces for 15 fish wasn't enough to help him advance to Sunday's round, but McClelland still earned valuable points and experience.

"Honestly, I feel like I should have had a better day," McClelland said. "I think I should have easily come in with another 19 to 20 pounds Saturday. I just really had an off day, and it was unfortunate that it happened in such a crucial part of the tournament.

"The fish were really locked on to their beds today. Through the course of the week I could make two or three throws were I thought I could feel like there was one lurking, and eventually they would catch and eat it good. Today, though, they would just nip at the bait instead of taking it. I just lost a lot of fish today because of it, which is disappointing because I felt like it was one of those days that I could have done a lot better."

With a day that started off promising, McClelland isn't quite sure what he could have done to change Saturday's outcome.

"The morning started off pretty well for me," McClelland said. "I had one big bite right off the bat that I wasn't able to catch. Instead, I caught a different large one within the first 45 minutes, and I thought it was going to end up being a really good day. Unfortunately, the day turned and I went for about two hours without any bites.

"I really don't know if I can completely say what the reason was for the turn of events today. It may have been the overcast skies or maybe I caught too many fish already out of the area I had been in the whole tournament."

McClelland and the rest of the Bassmaster Elite Series anglers will resume competition April 3-6 at Table Rock Lake in Branson, Mo.
