Nico Müller trains with Red Bull Leipzig

Audi’s new signing Nico Müller swapped his driver’s suit for a soccer jersey and cleats for a day. The DTM driver, together with his DTM rivals Robert Wickens and Antonio Felix da Costa, spent a practice day with the soccer club Red Bull Leipzig. The day before, the young Swiss had watched the team take victory in the top match against VfL Osnabrück live at the stadium and ‘talked shop’ with sports director Ralf Rangnick. A reciprocal visit by the soccer players is planned for the DTM race at Oschersleben.

Timo Scheider in the German eight

He has gotten to know numerous interesting athletes and disciplines in his life – and this was another training day Timo Scheider will not soon forget. The Audi driver visited the German men’s eight crew, the finest example of German competitive rowing. Following a visit to the gym and joint lunch including an exchange with Olympic gold medalists Kristof Wilke and Richard Schmidt, the two-time DTM Champion joined the crew in the boat.

Dieter Gass visits Allianz

An exciting virtual excursion to the race track for the guests of the Allianz Global Automotive Dialog in Munich: Dieter Gass, Head of DTM at Audi Sport, was a guest at the event hosted by the renowned insurance company and in an interview talked about the fascination and special challenges in motorsport. The forum attended by 140 visitors was fully focused on automotive topics.

„Rocky“ visits Schweinfurt plant of partner Schaeffler

Mike Rockenfeller got some extra motivation from his most faithful supporters: the DTM champion visited the Schweinfurt site of partner Schaeffler, answered the questions of the staff and wrote plenty of autographs. He felt the enthusiasm of the large number Audi and DTM fans. In 2014, the Audi RS 5 DTM from „Rocky“ will sport the striking livery of the company for the third consecutive year.

Audi drivers visit Formula 1 in Schools

DTM Champion Mike Rockenfeller and Audi GT driver Markus Winkelhock visited the Audi Forum Neckarsulm on Friday. The two race drivers enthusiastically watched the competition for the Baden-Wuerttemberg ‘Formula 1 in Schools’ Championship title that was held there. Children and teenagers aged 11 to 19 competed in their self-made model race cars. Together with the not-for-profit ‘Formula 1 at School’ organization, Audi aims to spark the interest of young people in technical careers. An autograph session with the two successful Audi racers concluded the day that was entirely dedicated to motorsport.

Prosperia C. Abt Racing with three Audi R8 LMS ultra in ADAC GT Masters

Prosperia C. Abt Racing is returning to Germany’s top-caliber GT series with three Audi R8 LMS ultra cars as the title defender. The winners of last year’s team classification in the ADAC GT Masters are again fielding three Audi R8 LMS ultra cars. The team directors Christian Abt and Slobodan Cvetkovic are relying on three strong driver pairings. Fabian Hamprecht is sharing car number 26 with the Dane Nicky Thiim, last year’s winner of the Nürburgring 24 Hours and Supercup winner. The three-time Supercup winner René Rast and the South African Kelvin van der Linde, who decided the VW Scirocco R-Cup in his favor last year, are competing in car number 27. Car number 28 is shared by GT Sprint International Series Champion Thomas Schöffler and Markus Winkelhock, a previous winner of the Nürburgring 24 Hours.

Phoenix Racing is another Audi team to compete in Blancpain Sprint Series

Following the Belgian Audi Club Team WRT, Phoenix Racing is another Audi team to have submitted its nomination for the Blancpain Sprint Series. The team of Ernst Moser will be fielding two Audi R8 LMS ultra cars. A high-caliber driver squad will be taking turns at the wheel of GT3 race cars. The two former GT1 World Champions Marc Basseng and Markus Winkelhock, who won the Nürburgring 24 Hours with Audi Sport Team Phoenix in 2012, will each be driving an R8. Basseng’s partner in car number 5 will be the 17-year-old junior British driver Alessandro Latif. Winkelhock will be sharing the cockpit with the seasoned Austrian campaigner Niki Mayr-Melnhof, who has previously won a 12-hour race in the R8 LMS.

Audi Team Hitotsuyama to compete in Super GT racing series

Audi Team Hitotsuyama will be competing with support by Audi Japan in the Japanese Super GT racing series for the first time. The squad will be fielding an Audi R8 LMS ultra in the GT 300 class of Japan’s leading sports car series. Richard Lyons and Tomonobu Fujii are sharing the cockpit. The 34-year-old Northern Irishman Lyons was the overall Super GT winner in 2004 and drove an R8 LMS ultra in Japan in the past two years. The 33-year-old Japanese Fujii already has a title win with Audi under his belt, having won the 2011 Super Taikyu Series in the R8 LMS. Seven of the eight Super GT events in 2014 will be held in Japan, plus there will be one race in Thailand.

A word from ... Tom Kristensen

You’ve been on the Le Mans grid 17 times. But for driving the Audi R18 e-tron through the city center you need to learn a slightly different route.

Driving a race car in public traffic is a unique opportunity. And it’s not just on any street or road but right in Le Mans from the Place des Jacobins to the race track. After so many years at Le Mans, this will be a very emotional moment for me, too. And I’m driving the most beautiful race car I’ve ever seen.

In four weeks from now, at the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) season opener, you’ll be at the wheel of car number ‘1’ together with your World Championship winning team-mate Loïc Duval and your new team-mate Lucas di Grassi. You’ll be the hunted – is that a good feeling?
It’s the best feeling we could wish for. At the same time, it’ll kick off a season that promises to become a real thriller. Toyota has always been a strong opponent, now Porsche will be an additional rival. The new regulations have reset all the clocks to zero. I can hardly wait for the action to start at Silverstone in less than a month from now.

Following the teambuilding event with Audi Sport in Lanzarote, you invited the team members for an action-packed day in Denmark. Will the cohesion of the team be a crucial factor in the battle for the WEC title this year?
Everybody at Audi and Audi Sport Team Joest knows how important team play and mutual respect between all the members are to Dr. Ullrich and his squad. It’s out of the question that we’re going to have a much tougher competition in the WEC this year than ever before. That’s why the battle is not just about technological progress, as the human factor will be really crucial. At Audi, we’re well-poised for the challenge.

Coming up next week

28-29/03 Le Castellet (F), Prologue FIA WEC
28/03 Sepang (MAL), round 1, Malaysian Super Series
29/03 Nürburgring (D), round 1, Endurance Championship
29/03 Marc Gené’s 40th birthday
30/03 St. Petersburg (USA), round 1, Pirelli World Challenge
30/03 Sandown (AUS), round 1, Australian GT Championship
