Stellar Weekend In Palatka Lands Walker In The Top 10

Another successful day on St. Johns River turned into a bigger paycheck, more points, and a huge smile for pro angler David Walker at the conclusion of the Bassmaster Elite Series event in Palatka.

Sitting on the bubble spot when he launched Sunday morning, Walker was able to jump up to sixth place with his 17-pound, 10-ounce stringer. The Cabela's/GEICO For Your Boat pro angler brought in a competitive 71 pounds, 13 ounces over the course of the weekend, putting himself in contention with the sport's best after an initial start that wasn't as favorable.

"When it comes to championship Sunday, the money is not going to change much at all but the major difference is the points," Walker said. "Six points may not seem like a big difference, but for me it's a difference of one ounce. I sat around yesterday after weigh-in sweating out an ounce to make the cut, so that's how important it is.

"To me, you have to feel good that if this thing were to have kept going on, I'd be gaining ground on the leaders. Obviously, I was doing something right this weekend. I've been in the other position, where you start off the tournament strong and just fade away when it counts most, but here I just kept gaining and I'm proud of that."

Experience really played into Walker's favor Sunday when questionable conditions came into play throughout the last day of competition. Using his knowledge of the area, he was able to bring in another solid stringer while other anglers struggled.

"The water color was constant all the way through my normal area and it never brightened up," Walker said. "I've fished Florida enough to know that you can't fight that type of water and succeed. I don't care how many fish are there, you aren't going to catch them no matter what you try to do.

"Instead, I put the nose of my Cabela's/GEICO For Your Boat Ranger to the wind and went to the leeward side of the lake to start looking. I got a bite within 10 minutes, reaffirming that it was a smart move for me to make."

After overcoming the changing water conditions, Walker bought in a competitive weight thanks to a plan that worked out for him.

"As far as walking away from the tournament, I feel good about it overall," Walker said. "I'm happy with my finish and I'm proud of the way I fished, including the choices I made. I stuck with a plan coming into Palatka: I knew I was going to go fish Lake George because that was my best chance of doing well. It was too big of an area for a guy from Tennessee to come down and try to learn it all. I chose a big area and fished it to the best of my ability."

The Bassmaster Elite Series will resume competition April 3-6 at Table Rock Lake in Branson, Mo.
