QLD Young Gun Set For Debut At Sandown Amchamp Opener This Weekend

This weekend’s opener for the Australian Manufacturers Championship at Sandown International Raceway (29-30 March) will host the category debut of two Queensland speedsters – 16 year old Brock Giblin of Landsborough and 30 year old Nick Lange of Airlie Beach.

For Osborne Motorsport, the introduction of these two racers to their team and the AMChamp Series adds to what is already a special event as it marks 25 consecutive years of their involvement in production car racing.

Giblin – also a promising football player - comes to Osborne Motorsport fresh from taking victory at the Queensland Excel Series opening round earlier this month, where he re-set the lap record and took all three race wins.

“You couldn’t even understand how excited I am to be joining Osborne Motorsport and the AMChamp Series, it is just such a big opportunity for me and I am so thankful to (Team Principal) Colin Osborne and everyone else involved for this chance,” said Giblin, who is currently studying year 11 at Maleny State High School.

“I started racing in sprint events in 2012 and then in the Excel Series in 2013, as a youngster I have definitely had my fair share of tests but they have all enabled me to develop as a driver while learning from everyone I could. I am very aware of the fact that I haven’t got here on my own - any victory I have is a shared victory with my dad Peter and everyone else who has helped me and taught me along the way.

“Some people have told me I am defying logic when they see me in the small excels when I have such a big frame, but for me I am just out there doing the best I can and hopefully I can bring home some good results for Colin.”

Giblin will be just one half of the line up for the #31 Osborne Motorsport Mazda 3 when the AMChamps hit the track for its opening stanza - the Sandown 3 Hour Classic - this weekend, with Mining Maintenance Planner Lange bringing some significant endurance experience to the table.

“I have been having a bit of a break from racing since 2011, but before then I had been competing in various endurance events for around nine years including the Bathurst 12 Hour and various one hour enduros,” said Lange, who has in the past spent time as part of the category management team for the Carrera Cup.

“I have been trying to make my way back to the driver’s seat for a little while now, so I am absolutely stoked to be joining a professional and well established team like Osborne Motorsport.

“After a few years away from the sport there are probably going to be a few nerves on the first day, but I am sure they will be gone once I get a few laps under my belt!”

For Team Principal Colin Osborne, this weekend will be one of pride as his begins his 25th year in the championship. Osborne will take the wheel of the #13 Osborne Motorsport Mazda3, alongside long-time team member Hadrian Morrall.

“I have won the championship outright three times, and my team have been victorious in the class ranks so many times I have lost count!” said Osborne, who started out in the championship in 1990 and clocked up his 400th production car race start in 2013.

“I don’t think there are many out there who can say they have competed for 25 consecutive years in the one class of racing, I am pretty proud of our long involvement and to celebrate we will be running a special livery on the cars this year which will be unveiled on-track.

“We are also pleased to welcome our two new drivers – Nick has quite broad experience as well as lots of endurance miles under his belt, and Brock at only 16 years of age is already showing a lot of promise so we are happy to be able to help him step up to the next level.

“We don’t race to come second, so while Class C of this championship is very competitive and challenging you can rest assured that even with two new drivers we won’t be going home satisfied from each event unless we know we got the best result we possibly could have under all the circumstances.”

The Australian Manufacturers Championship, part of the Shannons Australian Motor Racing Nationals, allows a wide-ranging list of vehicles sold in the domestic automotive market to take to the track and compete for a prestigious

CAMS title. The two-pronged Championship awards the vehicle manufacturer, as well as the ultimately successful driver, with six separate classes making up the Championship to provide one of the most eclectic fields of competitors in Australian motorsport. Featuring everything from high-performance vehicles all the way through to those running on alternative energy, the Australian Manufacturers Championship places style alongside muscle, ingenuity versus agility, and continent against continent across five national circuit racing events:

Round One – 28-30 March, Sandown Raceway – Sandown 3 Hour Classic
Round Two – 23-25 May, Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit – Great Southern 4 Hour
Round Three – 11-13 July, Sydney Motorsport Park – Australian 4 Hour
Round Four – 8-10 August, Queensland Raceway – 2 x 200km races
Round Five – 17-19 October, Wakefield Park – 2 x 200km races
