Gaulding Faced With Adversity Prevails To 11th Place Finish

Gray Gaulding and the No. 20 Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Chevrolet team entered Saturday's, Kevin Whitaker Chevrolet 150 with a four point lead in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East (KNPSE) points standings only to be faced with adversity throughout the day. Gaulding and the entire team never let it get them down.

Gaulding posted 26 laps in Saturday's opening 45 minute practice session, posting a quick time of 21.506. After a short 30 minute break and a debrief session with crew chief Ryan McKinney and competition director Doug Howe, the team worked on the Krispy Kreme Chevy before the start of final practice.

Final practice would have it's own trials and tribulations for Gaulding after a flat left rear tire during his mock qualifying run. Gaulding bounced back after getting a new tire from Goodyear and posted a time of 21.730.

Gaulding would gather back together with McKinney and Howe following final practice leading into two lap qualifying. At 6:00 p.m. Gaulding would get ready for his attempt at setting fast time. Gaulding was the 14th car to attempt time and with a time of 21.006 would line his Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Chevrolet on the outside of row seven.

When the green flag dropped just after 8:00 p.m. Gaulding knew he didn't have any time to waste working his way through the field. Gaulding had moved into 12th by lap 14 and into 11th at lap 18. Gaulding would ride in 11th through the next 52 laps before getting rooted going into turn 1 just before the halfway break sending Gaulding outside the top-15 and into 18th.

When the caution flag flew for the halfway break, Gaulding went into telling crew chief Ryan McKinney about his Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Chevrolet explaining he was free on entry and could get any turn through the center. McKinney call out a round of adjustments including four tires, fuel, track bar adjustment and pulling out a spring rubber.

When the green flag flew once again at lap 78, Gaulding made his charge back toward the top-10 and cracked it at lap 82 passing cars in the outside groove. At lap 88 Gaulding passed for 9th and reported his Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Chevrolet to be getting snug at lap 98.

Gaulding continued his march towards the front moving as high as 6th at lap 115, before starting to lose the handle of his chassis and sliding backwards to hold on to his car and bring home an 11th place finish.

Next time out for Gray Gaulding and the No. 20 Krispy Kreme Chevrolet team will be the Blue Ox 100 at Richmond International Raceway on April 25th where Gaulding set fast time in 2013.

Gray Gaulding's Post-Race Thoughts:
"It wasn't the race results we we're looking for but everyone has stayed positive, we will go through our notes and learn and move forward. Our next race is at Richmond which is my hometown, we qualified on the pole and led a lot of laps last year and look to finish it all off this year."

Ryan McKinney's Post-Race Thoughts:
"Gray and the entire team never gave up. We struggled in practice, missed it a little in qualifying but continued working and moving forward during the race. Got up into the top-10, wish we could have finished there but we will move and come back even stronger."

Start: 14th Finish: 11th Drivers' Points Standing: 3rd (-9)
