Spotless Day For Fantin And Ghiotto In Jerez

In Jerez de la Frontera, the renowned Spanish track where F.Renault 3.5 is holding the last pre-season test, Draco Racing enjoyed a trouble-free first day of running. Both Pietro Fantin and Luca Ghiotto completed their programmes, clocking 47 and 40 laps respectively. While the team’s work on raw performance was somehow limited by a fresh rubber shortage (each driver must complete the full three days with no more than five sets per the regulations) this didn’t mean that the Draco boys could relax: instead, the team’s technical staff focused on race performance, sending their drivers on track with used tyres in order to evaluate different setup solutions.

Fantin had to cope with some understeer issues that where solved late in the afternoon session, while Ghiotto proved his enhanced confidence with the car with a successful “qualifying” run in the final minutes of the day, after a red flag caused by Nato. At the end of this fast Monday the laptimes posted by Ghiotto (1’27”340) and Fantin (1’27”391) were worth P13 and 14 overall.

Pietro Fantin: S1 – P14; S2 – P11
“I didn’t like today too much, truth be told. I like running on new tyres, while the regs for this test days force us to complete too many laps on worn rubber. Anyway, we had to cope with it like anybody else, and we tried to do our best. The car was understeery in the morning, but that behaviour became less evident in the afternoon when we did fit new tyres. Unluckily the red flag just ruined my best lap, I could have been much quicker than that”.

Luca Ghiotto: S1 – P15; S2 – P9
“I’m quite happy with my day. In the morning the car felt ok but I overdrove a bit when the brakes where still cold and I ended up in the gravel. The afternoon was much better, both on used and new rubber. In my last run I was ready to make the most of the extra grip provided by fresh Michelins, but the red flag was waved after Nato went off. The track went back to green with just three minutes to go and at the moment it was like a ‘Superpole’ a situation I had never faced in my career. I nailed a very good lap at the first try, and frankly I’m really happy that I coped with such a stressful situation that well”.
