Fantin And Draco Sixth Quickest In Jerez Day 2

The second day of F.Renault 3.5 testing in Jerez brought good news to Draco Racing as Brazilian talent Pietro Fantin posted the sixth quickest laptime overall. Fantin clocked his best flyer in the morning session, making the most of an improved setup that solved the understeer issue that had hampered him and his Zytek-powered Dallara on Monday.

Despite using just one set of tyres (most of his fellow competitors elected to use two) Fantin posted a laptime that was just four tenths off the day’s best, an achievement that left an impression on Draco’s staff. In the afternoon, following a technical rule change that bans the use of sideskirts for the 2014 F.Renault 3.5 season, Pietro tried his first runs on the new aero specs, finding a very different car but still posting the 6th quickest time of the session.

On the team’s other car, Luca Ghiotto had to cope with quite an unlucky day, especially when it came to low-fuel runs: the talented Italian driver had to abort the first one (in the morning) because of a yellow flag, while in the afternoon he had to do the same due to unexpected brake issues.

Pietro Fantin: S1 – P6; S2 – P6
“I’m quite happy with our performance today, especially considering that we solved the understeer issues that had emerged yesterday and that in the morning we were nearly as quick as the pacesetter despite using just one set of new tyres. In the afternoon we did our first runs without the sideskirts and I have to say that I was surprised by how that changed the car. Now we have a lot of oversteer in the hi-speed corners, a treacherous behaviour that we’ll have to correct with the right setup changes”.

Luca Ghiotto: S1 – P18; S2 – P15
“I had quite an odd day. All in all I’m satisfied with my pace on used tyres and with job we did in that respect, but on the other hand I have no idea on what I could have done on new rubber. That’s becaused I was forced to abort both my tries, in the morning due to a yellow flag and in the afternoon due to some issues with the brakes. Luckily, this means that I have three new sets still available, and that tomorrow I’ll have the opportunity to try at least a couple of low-fuel runs”.
