Status GP Confirms Driver Line-Up For GP3 Test

Established GP3 front-runner Nick Yelloly, who was confirmed for the 2014 season last month, will make his debut with the Status GP team at the Portuguese circuit, which hosts the first of three pre-season tests on Thursday 27th and Friday 28th March.

Joining Yelloly across both days will be Formula Renault 2.0 NEC graduate Alfonso Celis Jr in the #28 car, while in the #27 car former FR3.5 racer Richie Stanaway will test for the team on Day 1, before fellow single-seater returnee Roberto Merhi joins the action on Day 2.

Yelloly, who finished sixth overall in GP3 last year, is eager for testing to get underway after a winter of hard work and preparation. “I really look forward to getting going,” he said. “I’m already well settled into the team and it’s going to be great to get back into the swing of things on the track.”

Rising Mexican star Celis Jr, who also made his F3 debut last year in the FIA European and British series, is looking forward to his first run in the 400hp GP3 Series car. “I’m really excited to be here with Status Grand Prix,” said Celis. “I aim to take the best experience possible from the test and I’m here to learn the team, the car and how it all works.”

For Stanaway, a Gravity Sport Management driver, the test will mark a return to single-seaters almost two years on from when his 2012 FR3.5 campaign was curtailed by a back injury as a result of a crash at Spa. Now a factory Aston Martin Racing driver in Pro class GTs, serial championship-winner Stanaway returns to GP3 after a stunning race-winning debut on a one-off appearance at Spa in 2011.

Spanish ace Merhi also returns to the GP3 Series having competed during the inaugural 2010 season, when he finished sixth overall in the driver standings despite only beginning the programme mid-season. Merhi went on to win the F3 Euro Series Championship in 2011 before becoming a works Mercedes DTM driver since 2012.

Following the test at Estoril, the GP3 teams will test at Jerez and Barcelona before the opening round of the 2014 GP3 Series season, which is supporting the Formula One Spanish Grand Prix at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya on 9th-11th May.
