Carlin's Lynn and Bernstorff 1 -2 in GP3 Testing

The Carlin GP3 team made a strong start to the 2014 GP3 Series this week, finishing the season’s first official test 1 -2 with British racer Alex Lynn P1 and Emil Bernstorff P2. Lynn who drove a GP3 car for the first time this week, topped both sessions in today’s dry running, after swapping places at the top of the timesheets with fellow rookie Bernstorff. Team mate Luis Sa Silva also enjoyed a strong test and was consistently in the top ten, finishing this afternoon’s running with the fifth fastest time. All three drivers used the time to successfully work on both their qualifying runs and race runs.

As the 2014 season got underway yesterday, the drivers had a limited amount of dry running before heavy rain fell on the Estoril circuit, leaving the remainder of the day’s running a wet affair. Despite taking part in his first ever GP3 test, Lynn made the most of the short dry window set the second fastest time of the morning, just 0.173s ahead of team mate Bernstorff. With conditions making it difficult to improve in the afternoon, Lynn finished the day third quickest, Bernstorff was fourth while Sa Silva was eleventh.

Following rain overnight, the drivers were greeted with a wet track again this morning. Lynn once again made an early mark on the session, clearly enjoying his first test in the GP3 Series car; the British racer finished the morning session as the quickest car on track. Team mate Bernstorff finished just behind him in second overall making sure to handle the drying conditions perfectly. Sa Silva meanwhile had spent the majority of his morning programme focusing on longer race runs and was 13th overall.

When the circuit went green for the afternoon session Sa Silva switched to focus his attention on qualifying runs and on the completely dry track soon flew to the top of the timing screens. However everything began to change as Red Bull Junior Lynn became the man to beat – while Bernstorff, who had yet to run new tyres, was now himself focusing on his longer runs during the opening hour.

All three Carlin men spent the majority of their afternoon session in or around the top five and in the final few minutes Lynn continued with his storming track progress to snatch the fastest lap of the day. The Brit had come under some pressure from Bernstorff in the final 30 minutes as the two drivers swapped places however in the end Lynn was the man to beat. Bernstorff would finish the session in second overall with team mate Sa Silva close behind in fifth.

Speaking about his first GP3 test Lynn said, “We made a good step forward in the afternoon yesterday, but it started raining and we weren’t really able to validate that. When we took to the track again this morning, it was clear that we had gone in the right direction and it had worked. The car had a really good balance and we managed to do some practice starts and a race run today as well.

“I’m pleasantly surprised to be quickest after my first ever GP3 test, but together with my engineer we’ve done a lot of homework over the winter and I’m glad that’s paid off. It’s a testament to the hard work the team have put in with the drivers. It’s only testing, but it’s a good start.”

Team mate Bernstorff was also positive adding, “It’s good to be at the top of the timesheets with Alex, and we had a bit of a gap to the rest of the field as well. The car felt nice; there’s just a couple of things we need to work on, with the car and in my driving. We wanted some clear dry laps today as the experienced GP3 drivers have an advantage with that, so good to get a good dry test programme in today.”

Sa Silva concluded, “I think it was quite positive to finish in the top five, and less than one tenth from P3 so I’m happy. Compared to last year it looks as though myself and the team have improved quite a lot. We need to work hard to keep going in this direction.”

The cars and drivers will take to the track for the second official GP3 Series test in Jerez 10th-11th April.
