Gleason Set to Tackle Germany's Nurburgring

Kevin Gleason is heading to Germany to tackle one of the most challenging road courses in the world — the Nürburgring — April 5-6.

The Johnstown, Pa.-based driver will compete in the ADAC six-hour qualifying race there that Sunday, April 6, in preparation for the 24 Hours of Nürburgring June 21-22.

He'll drive the same car with which he won the NASA 25 Hours of Thunderhill Dec. 9 at Thunderhill Raceway Park in Willows, Calif. by a whopping 28 laps — the Rotek Racing Audi TT RS.

His co-drivers will be Rob Huff and Richard Meins. Huff, the 2012 FIA World Touring Car champion, was part of the winning driver line-up at the 25 Hours of Thunderhill. Gleason drove with Meins, a class winner at the 24 Hours of Spa, at the Bathurst 12-Hour race in Australia in February.

"I've always dreamed of driving the Nürburgring, so to actually be racing there makes it that much more special," Gleason said. "I am really looking forward to getting back in the Rotek Racing Audi TT RS that we won Thunderhill in, and to be driving with Huffy and Richard Meins again will be a pleasure. It will certainly be a challenge, as it is the world's toughest track, but it's a challenge that I am really looking forward to."

The event will be held on the entire 15.2-mile circuit, which includes the old Nordschleife (North Loop) and most of the Grand Prix circuit. The North Loop is 12.9 miles long and has more than 1,000 feet of elevation changes. Three-time Formula 1 World Champion Jackie Stewart nicknamed the old track "The Green Hell," and many consider it to be the most demanding and difficult purpose-built racing circuit in the world.

Getting acclimated to the track will be the biggest priority during the qualifying race weekend. There will be approximately two-and-a-half-hours of nighttime driving during the qualifying race, which will be very helpful as the teams prepare for the 24-hour race.

The event is also important in that 10 of the top 30 starting positions for the 24-hour race will be determined by the finishing positions of the qualifying race.

Both the qualifying race and the 24-hour race are sanctioned by the Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobile-Club e.V. (ADAC), the largest automobile club in Europe.

Fans can follow Gleason at Kevin Gleason Motorsports on Facebook or @KevinGleason60 on Twitter.

Rotek Racing's Web site is at rotekracing.com. It also has a Facebook page, and it's @rotekracing on Twitter.
