Crew chief Todd Okuhara's son Shane, along with other Okuhara family members, is on site near Las Vegas cheering on Spencer Massey and the Battery Extender team for this weekend's championship eliminations.

"Todd's son Shane is here and we think of him as our good luck charm," Spencer said. "He comes out to a few races a year and it seems like we always do well when he's around. I know it's special for Todd and his brother Scott our car chief to have their family from Hawaii here in Vegas.

Another special treat for the team is the Hawaiian cuisine provided by Aloha Specialties, a Las Vegas restaurant that keeps Massey's team and friends well fed throughout the weekend.

"I think I always leave the Vegas races with a few extra pounds," Spencer said. "It's cool though. Everyone it the pits comes over and grabs a plate."

The Hawaiian mojo resulted in a solid qualifying performance for Spencer. The No. 4 starting position is their best staring spot this season in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season.

Okuhara and crew chief Phil Shuler tuned Spencer to a 3.794-second pass at 323 mph, their best of the weekend, during Saturday's fourth and final qualifying session under overcast skies.

"We're definitely getting our car back to what it was when we were running strong last year," Spencer said. "We're back to being consistent and the car is responding to the changes Phil and Todd make.

"That last qualifying run was a boost of confidence for this team. A 3.79 is the kind of run we're going to need to make in the first round tomorrow so now we have all of that data to work off.

"We're looking to not only make it to our first final of the season but we want to get that Wally and get some momentum going."
