Zack Meyer to Start Ninth in St. Petersburg 100 After Rain Cancels Indy Lights Qualifying

After a warm, sunny, and windy morning practice session, Canadian racer Zack Meyer was ready to take his #2 TMR/DAMIS PARTNERS III/Innisfil Indy Karting/Xtreme Coil Drilling car out onto the streets of St. Petersburg, Fla., for the first qualifying session of the 2014 season. However, the weather turned sour, a three hour rain delay put a kink in the schedule, and Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires qualifying was canceled. With qualifying abandoned, the grid was set based on the combined practice times from Friday and today, and Meyer will start the St. Petersburg 100 in ninth position.

Meyer, hailing from Innisfil, Ontario, took advantage of the two 45-minute practice sessions over Friday and today to work with his Team Moore Racing crew to improve the setup of his car. Friday was a challenge, with Meyer only able to post the eleventh fastest time of the session. This morning, though, Meyer worked through a program of changes that included a run on brand new Cooper Tires. With the advancements to his car’s setup, and fresh rubber at his disposal, Meyer improved his fastest lap time to 1:09.7747, good enough for ninth place in the session.

With the onset of severe weather, Meyer and Team Moore Racing were disappointed to lose out on valuable track time in qualifying to improve their setup and their grid position. However, Meyer remains upbeat heading into Sunday’s St. Petersburg 100.

"Obviously, I’m disappointed that we didn’t get a chance to go out for qualifying," relayed Meyer. "We had some more changes we wanted to make to the car, but we’ll go into the race knowing that we were on the right track. I’m still learning how to get the most out of the new Cooper Tires, and we’re also working on getting a setup where I feel comfortable with the feel of the front of the car. Now we head into the race tomorrow looking for a great result and we’ll fight our way through the field."

The 21-year-old will take the green flag for the 45-lap St. Petersburg 100 at 12:45 p.m. EDT. The television broadcast of the race will air on NBC Sports Network on April 4 at 4 p.m. EDT.
