2014 NHRA: Goodyear, NHRA Sportsmen at Vegas

In the 62-year history of the National Hot Rod Association a driver has won two categories in the same national event 29 times. Two of those rare doubles belong to Maspeth, N.Y.’s Peter Biondo.

Racing on Goodyear tires, Biondo won in both Stock Eliminator and Super Stock in the Summit Racing.com NHRA Finals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Biondo’s wins came in the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series for sportsman racers. Competition is open among tiremakers in the Lucas Oil series.

Biondo led a near sweep of the event by Goodyear-shod racers. Of the 10 racing categories, Goodyear-equipped cars won eight times at Las Vegas.

The other Goodyear winners included Nick Januik (in Top Alcohol Funny Car), Joey Severance (Top Alcohol Dragster) and Lou Ficco (Competition Eliminator) Lucas Oil competition. Tony Schumacher (Top Fuel), Alexis DeJoria (Funny Car) and Erica Enders-Stevens (Pro Stock) won in the Mello Yello Drag Racing Series for professional teams.

Biondo’s double was his second. He is one of 17 drivers ever to double up in an NHRA national event. He has won 48 times in national events.

“I definitely knew I doubled up,” Biondo said. “I was pumped up.”

Biondo’s wins came on one bias-ply Goodyear tire and one radial. His second double came under some of the most trying conditions teams are likely to see this season. Heavy winds forced the NHRA to run some categories while holding others for later in the day, depending on the down force characteristics in each category.

“You had to pay attention to it,” Biondo said. “We just calculated it and dialed it up when we had to.”

Januik won in his home town and grabbed his first national victory.

Severance, Woodburn, Ore., took his win in a category where Goodyear is traditionally successful. Every car in the semifinals was on Goodyears.

Lou Ficco won in Competition Eliminator.

Goodyear employs about 69,000 people at manufacturing plants and facilities in 22 nations. Based in Akron, Ohio, Goodyear is among the largest tiremakers in the world and is the worldwide leader in race tire innovation.
