Alex Morgan Dominates At Brands Hatch In The Season Opener With Two Pole Positions And Victory In Both Races

After a phenomenal return to racing in 2013, the reigning Renault UK Clio Cup vice champion, Welshman Alex Morgan, immediately made his mark at the inaugural 2014 Renault UK Clio Cup Championship meeting at Brands Hatch last weekend taking lights to flag victories in the opening two races of the season and earning the ‘Driver of the Event’ accolade.

Originally from Porthcawl in Wales, Alex started his single-seater career in 2005 and went on to become a race winner in the BARC Formula Renault UK Championship and a podium scorer in the Formula Renault Eurocup Championship on his way to being the highest ranked British driver in the championship. In 2008 he took a four year sabbatical to complete his law studies, and made an emphatic return to racing in 2013 by coming a sensational second in the Renualt UK Clio Cup. He is currently a Solicitor at Pitmans LLP in Reading.

His impressive weekend saw the 26-year-old securing pole for both weekend races on Saturday and win the season-opening race later that day on the Indy circuit with a lights-to-flag victory which saw him winning the race by over 4 seconds. In race two it was more of the same, with Alex leading into Paddock at the start and then maintaining his position to the chequered flag following a fierce battle initially with Mike Bushell and former champion Paul Rivett.

Alex now heads into the second weekend of action at Donington Park on 19-20 April leading the championship with a maximum haul of 64 points, and a 15 point lead over Bushell.

Alex Morgan: “The weekend started really well on Friday and I knew I had the pace to do well in qualifying. The first set of tyres worked perfectly, I got good space and, although the second set of tyres didn’t work as well, I was happy to take double pole. The start of the first race was critical so I made sure of a good getaway and we had a strict plan not to over-drive the car to start with as we knew the new Clio generates a large tow, so even if you’re two or three tenths faster than someone they can gain it back on the straight. We managed to pull a gap later on in the race and it all worked out well with a comfortable win. Race 2 was more of the same but I couldn’t break the tow of the second guy so I concentrated on no mistakes and led to the chequered flag. It has been a phenomenal weekend and really couldn’t have wished for more, particularly for the Tesco backed KX energy drink brand, which is my new sponsor for 2014.”
