Mcclelland Hopes Knowledge Of Table Rock Lake Helps At Elite Series Event

Cabela's/GEICO For Your Boat pro angler Mike McClelland is hoping a little home cooking will help him feast on the Bassmaster Elite Series field during this week's tournament on Table Rock Lake.

McClelland's hometown of Bella Vista, Ark., is about 80 miles from Table Rock, and he has fished on the lake many times before and during his career.

"I really expect it to be a great tournament on Table Rock in the Ozarks," McClelland said. "This is a lake that I grew up fishing on a lot. It really has a lot of good fish, and it's finally starting to warm up."

McClelland is aware that his knowledge of the waters in southeast Missouri doesn't automatically make him the favorite at the event, but his experience should help him become a contender.

"The biggest thing with being familiar like I am with this one is it just gives you a lot of options," McClelland said. "There are a lot of great anglers in the Elite Series who have an opportunity to win the tournament. It's not like I'm going to be a shoo-in to win, but I think I know the lake well enough that once I pattern the fish and figure out what they're doing, I can run around the lake pretty freely and fish a lot of different water and a lot of different areas of the lake."

McClelland and the other Elite anglers should have any easier time weather-wise on Table Rock than during previous tournaments this season. The forecast calls for temperatures at 60 degrees or above all four days, a contrast to the bone-chilling cold at earlier tournaments.

"It's still going to be getting into mid- to lower-30s in the evenings, but at least it is going to warm up during the day," McClelland said. "It definitely makes it a lot more enjoyable not to wear so many clothes and be so bundled up."

Thunderstorms could be a factor on the first day of the tournament Thursday, but the layout of the winding lake should help avoid any problems.

"We might be fighting some of the spring thunder showers this week, which will make it a little bit dicey," McClelland said. "Fortunately, the lake bends and winds around enough that even if the wind blows 25 or 30 mph, you can still find areas where you can fish comfortably."
