Rotek Reunites A Winning Team And Adds BTCC Star For 'Ring' Assault

In a move that’s sure to delight the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship’s (BTCC) army of fans, Rotek Racing has announced that Rob Austin will strengthen its already winning driver line-up for this weekend’s ADAC Nürburgring 6 Hours (5-6 April).

The six-hour contest functions as a non-compulsory qualifier and is a key element in teams’ preparations for the legendary ADAC Zurich Nürburgring 24 Hours endurance race (19-22 June), offering competitors an opportunity to fettle their machinery and acclimatise to the circuit, which stretches for 14 miles through Germany’s spectacular Eifel Mountains.

The Robb Holland-led Rotek Racing outfit, which operates from a base at the infamous Nürburgring Nordschleife, is a regular frontrunner in the German VLN Endurance Championship.

It has notched-up other notable successes, winning the 2013 25 Hours of Thunderhill super-enduro, and last week embarked on its first full-time BTCC campaign with a sole Audi S3 saloon for American ‘tin-top’ star, Robb Holland.

Rotek is set to field two cars in this weekend’s Nürburgring 6 Hours. It will reunite a victorious driver combination, with former FIA World Touring Car Champion Rob Huff, American sportscar ace Kevin Gleason and Richard Meins targeting SP4T class honours in the team’s Thunderhill-winning Audi TTRS.

Holland will be joined in an SP8 Audi RS4 by multiple VLN victor, Danny Kubasik, and internet rally legend Bill Caswell, whose fascinating racing CV includes a life-changing adventure where he took on the WRC’s finest in Rally Mexico with a hand-built, $500 BMW 318i.

However, Holland made an exciting announcement over the Radio Silverstone airwaves on Tuesday evening (1 April).

The American joined BTCC pit lane reporter, Alan Hyde, on the popular Tintop Tuesday radio show to reveal that fan-favourite, Rob Austin, will complete Rotek’s Nurburgring 6 Hours driver line-up.

The race will mark BTCC race winner Austin’s first visit to ‘The Ring’ since filming scenes for the Ron Howard-directed movie, Rush, centred on the intense rivalry between F1 greats James Hunt and Niki Lauda during the 1976 grand prix season.

“This will be my first visit to the Nürburgring since driving my 1976 Surtees TS19 around the track while filming for Rush and I haven’t really clocked up many miles at all on the Nordschleife during my career,” said Austin. “But while I’m expecting it to be completely different to anything I’ve done before and a big learning curve, it’s a challenge I feel I’m ready for. In fact, it’s an incredibly exciting opportunity and will be a privilege to join Robb (Holland) and Rotek Racing on such a historic and evocative circuit – racing on the Nordschleife is actually high on my bucket list, so it’ll be nice to tick it off!”

Holland added: “I’m thrilled to have somebody of Rob Austin’s calibre joining Rotek Racing’s line-up for the Nürburgring 6 Hours – he’s a huge character who’s well-loved by the BTCC’s fans and he’s quick to boot! I’m sure he’ll acclimatise to the Audi RS4 in no time and I know he’s going to enjoy racing ‘The Ring’. I think the team is in good shape to achieve something big in both the SP4T and SP8 classes with such talented individuals behind the wheel and it’s going to set us up perfectly for the big race – the 24 Hours in June!”
