Walker Looks For Momentum To Carry Him To Solid Finish At Table Rock

Cabela's/GEICO For Your Boat angler David Walker has been competing long enough to know that momentum does matter in professional fishing, though he's a little unsure why.

"It's strange why fish care, but they seem to bite the guy who is in the best of moods more than they do the guy who's really mad," Walker said. "You would think that it has nothing to do with it. How would they know? Why would they care even if they did know?"

Walker, who has had a hot start to the 2014 season, hopes to keep the momentum rolling during the Bassmaster Elite Series event this weekend on Table Rock Lake.

"Momentum definitely has a place in this, just like any other sport," Walker said. "It's strange when you go to tournament after tournament and you're doing well, you sort of expect those results, and many times that's what happens. It seems like the ones where you really expect to fall apart, you almost go in there and prove yourself right.

"For me, having a good start to the season is always a good thing. I've fished so many years that I know that these fish here don't know where I finished at before nor do they care, so I've got to apply myself and get in there and figure them out. They're not going to come to me; I've got to go to them."

Walker has cashed in at all five events in which he has fished this season, including a strong sixth-place finish at the Elite Series tournament in Palatka, Fla., two weeks ago. Table Rock, of course, will offer much different conditions than Palatka.

"You can pick a direction and run until all your gas is gone," Walker said of the 67-square-mile lake. "There are a lot of places to go but so much of it looks the same. About everywhere you go it looks like the place you just left."

The lake has mountainous features with clear water and rocky banks.

"But there are a lot of fish in it," Walker said. "I expect it to be a good weigh-in."

One characteristic of the tournament this weekend is the 15-inch length limit for fish, and that has had Walker scratching his head during practice.

"It hasn't been nearly as good as I thought it would be," Walker said. "The numbers are there, but the quality of the fish seems to be really down. Getting them to 15 inches has been a chore. Getting a lot of bites has been easy. Twelve- to 14-inch fish are very common, but 15-inch fish seem to be a small percentage of what's biting.

"I'm curious to see if that's the case for everybody or just myself. Hopefully, I'll figure out a little something to turn that around because so far everywhere I've gone I've had the same result. There's got to be something that can change that for me."
