Carlin Drivers Happy After First Pre-Season Test

Carlin’s FIA Formula Three European Championship team have enjoyed two days of strong testing in Hungary this week during the first official test of the 2014 season. Jordan King, Jake Dennis and Ed Jones used the two day test to their advantage working on a variety of different programmes in their Volkswagen powered Dallara cars as they look ahead to the start of a new season with the introduction of new engines and rules to contend with.

The three Carlin drivers took to the track on Friday morning with the rest of the 2014 field giving them the first opportunity of the season to weigh up the competition – the day also provided the chance work on set up around the Hungaroring before the cars race there later in the season. Over the course of Friday it was King who was fighting at the front of the pack; the 2013 British Formula Three Champion ended the morning fastest of all and second overall on day one after electing not to run new tyres in the afternoon.

Taking to the track again on Saturday, King began to focus on the car set up, collecting data and completing longer race runs. The Brit finished the afternoon second fastest and ninth fastest of the day overall. Reflecting on his test King said, “Yesterday was very encouraging and the speed with which we got to grips with everything. I made progress quite quickly and found it relatively easy to get a good time out of the car. I think if we had used new tyres in the afternoon we could have been P1. Conditions were a little different today and that required a few changes, both in setup and driving styles. From a team point of view, we’ve made a really good start to the season.”

Formula Three rookie, and Racing Steps Foundation driver, Jake Dennis was quick to make an impression during the first day of testing. The British racer was sure to make himself well acquainted with his Carlin car while also get quickly up to speed. Learning the car well Dennis ended the first day of testing in fourth position overall. Dennis continued to impress throughout the second day of testing proving to be one of the most consistent drivers on track – once again setting the fourth fastest time of the day.

Reflecting on his first official Formula Three test Dennis said, “The Test went pretty well. I was P4 overall yesterday and then again today. We did two solid days of testing and learnt a lot. Considering it was my first official test in an F3 car I’m pretty happy. It was nice to work with the team properly, in a proper championship environment. We’re just focused now on getting ready for Red Bull Ring. There’s still a lot left in me, obviously this is the very start of my F3 car so I have a lot to learn still. The car is great though. I’m really liking the differences after stepping up from the FR2.0 car. There’s more grip and the balance is really nice. I’m looking to push more when we arrive in Austria.”

Team mate Ed Jones was also experiencing a solid two day test in which he was consistently running in and around the top ten. The UAE based driver made certain to gain as much experience around the Hungaroring before the second test of the season gets underway next week. Jones ran in and around the top ten throughout the entirety of testing setting the 11th fastest time on Friday and the tenth on Saturday.

Jones said of his testing programme, “The test started off well, then we struggled a bit at the end of the first day to keep the pace moving forwards but today we made some quite big improvements both with my driving and set-up. The team are working really well and we’re looking really competitive so I’m looking forward to the next test in Austria.”

Testing will resume at the Red Bull Ring 8th – 9th April.
