Bowe Retains Touring Car Masters Championship Lead

Coates Hire Racing ambassador John Bowe has retained the championship lead in the Touring Car Masters, after round two at Winton Raceway.

Bowe topped the timesheets in both practice sessions and then set a new qualifying lap record in his Trans Am Mustang, on his way to securing pole position.

Second on the grid was Jim Richards (Falcon Sprint) followed by Tony Karanfilovski (Trans Am Mustang) Greg Keene (Porsche 911) and Andrew Miedecke (Chevrolet Camaro) rounding out the top five.

Bowe got an excellent start from pole and left his rivals in his wake, romping away to win the opening seven-lap encounter by almost two seconds from Jim Richards. Third place went to Andrew Miedecke followed by the two hardtop GT Falcons of Eddie Abelnica and Keith Kassulke. Rounding out the top six was Greg Keene.

Race two had the top ten grid spots reversed with Bowe starting 10th.

This longer 10-lap race saw Bowe leap to sixth by the end of the opening lap and by half distance he’d grabbed another spot to sit fifth. He moved to fourth the following lap and then took second on the second last lap to finish behind fellow Trans Am Mustang driver, Tony Karanfilovski. Third was Abelnica followed by Richards and Kassulke making up the top five.

Bowe lined up on pole for the third and final race, but bogged down with wheelspin off the start and dropped to fifth by the end of the opening lap. Bowe was unable to move forward and remained in fifth for the remainder of the race. However, in his efforts to move forward he was rewarded with a new race lap record along the way.

Crossing the line first on this occasion was Richards, followed by Abelnica. Third was Karanfilovski from Miedecke, then Bowe and Kassulke in sixth.

After two rounds, Bowe leads the championship from Abelnica, Richards, Karanfilovski, Kassulke and Miedecke.

John Bowe: “I am delighted with the way Mustang Sally performed all weekend and proud to have achieved a new qualifying and race lap record for the category.

“There’s no doubt the competition has really stepped up this year, ensuring great racing for the fans. I am already looking forward to the next round at Hidden Valley in Darwin”.
