2014 Texas: NASCAR Sprint Cup Starting Line-up & Race Preview

By Mike Sulka

The 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup season has arrived at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas for the 18th Annual Duck Commander 500. NASCAR has been coming to Texas since 1997 for both the Cup and the NASCAR Nationwide series.

Texas is a 1.5-mile quad-oval that was completed in 1996. The banking in the turns is 24 degrees with a 2,250 foot frontstretch and a much shorter backstretch that is 1,330 feet. The amazing facility hosts the Cup series twice a year - since 2005 - with seating for up to 159,585. Jeff Burton and his Ford won the debut event in 1997 after starting 5th.

One of the most interesting stats regarding Texas is that the NASCAR Sprint Cup series has raced here 26 times, and had 17 different winners. Only Carl Edwards ( 3 - Fall 2005, Both 2008 races), Jimmie Johnson (3 - Fall 2007, Fall 2012, Fall 2013), Jeff Burton (2 - 1997, Spring 2007), Denny Hamlin (2- 2010 sweep), Tony Stewart (2 - Fall, 2006 & 2011), Matt Kenseth (2 - 2002, Spring 2011), and Greg Biffle ( 2 - Spring 2005, Spring 2012) have won this event multiple times.

Texas is a hard track to duplicate success.

Check out Carl Edwards for evidence. When Edwards hasn't won at Texas he has finished 8th or worse - except for 2011 when he grabbed a third and a second. His average finish over 14 races is 15th.

And he's the only of two drivers with three triumphs at Texas.

Burton's story is somewhat similar although he's finished in the top-ten nine times in 26 attempts. Interestingly, he is one of three drivers to have raced all 26 times at Texas - the others are: Bobby Labonte, and Jeff Gordon.

But, there is only one driver who has finished in the top-five eight times in the last 10 races - Matt Kenseth.

Did you know that over the 26 races since its inception, that the race winner had come from 8th or higher 20 times ?

Or how about this...

Out of 26 races, the Pole winner has won just three times, the driver starting second has won twice... but the driver starting third has won five times. However, fourth and fifth have also won... three times.

And, all of the six races over the last three years have been won from fifth or higher starting slots.

So with those stats in mind, it is time for our pick for the win... Jimmie Johnson.

So, if Johnson fails, keep an eye on Matt Kenseth, Tony Stewart and Greg Biffle. We could easily make a case for either of them winning as well.

Enjoy today's race, it is sure to be a another Texas thriller.
