2014 Bahrain GP: Formula One F1 Race Results - Hamilton, Mercedes Win!

By Mike Sulka

Under the lights for the first time, Mercedes Formula One F1 driver Lewis Hamilton made a great start and registered a thrilling win at the 2014 Bahrain Grand Prix as he held off his charging teammate Nico Rosberg after a late safety car period. For Hamilton, it it his second win of the 2014 season and 24th victory (equalling Juan Manuel Fangio) of his Formula One F1 career - 56th career podium. It was also Hamilton's first win at the Bahrain International Circuit.

For Mercedes - who let its drivers race - it was the team's third victory of the year and third straight triumph. The team also claimed their second one-two of the season. The victory marked the team's 16th all-time as a constructor.

In second, Nico Rosberg and his No. 6 Mercedes would start from Pole and lose out to Hamilton when the lights went out, and was then unable to use his late race advantage to seize victory. For Rosberg, it is his third podium of the 2014 Formula One F1 season, and 14th of his career.

In the battle for best of the rest, Sergio Perez (Force India) would claim the final step on the podium.

Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull) qualified third, started 13th, and fought with his teammate and the rest of the field to claim a fantastic fourth.

Nico Hulkenberg (Force India) would finish fifth.

In a few interesting moments, the Mercedes pair raced extremely hard for the lead on lap 19 with no calls coming from pitwall. At one point, Rosberg had taken the lead, with Hamilton then re-capturing the front running position. Hamilton then pitted, continued on the soft tyre, while Rosberg pitted two laps later with the "alternate" strategy - medium tyre.

On lap 42, a safety car was deployed after Pastor Maldonado (Lotus) speared Esteban Gutierrez (Sauber) as the Lotus exited pitlane. The Sauber flipped over ending his race. Gutierrez did walk away from the wreck.

At this point, Hamilton and Rosberg both pitted with Hamilton having to use the medium tyre, and Rosberg gaining the advantage with the soft tyre option. As the Safety Car left the track, Hamilton and Rosberg would have a thrilling duo with Hamilton keeping his place with the harder tyre.

Adrian Sutil (Sauber) retired from the race after succumbing to damage incurred during an early run-in with Jules Bianchi (Marussia).

Next up, the Formula One F1 series will race at the 2014 Chinese Grand Prix in two weeks.
