Mattias Ekström impresses fans in Graz

‘Der Spielberg in Graz’ – the spectacular season opening of the Red Bull Ring in the Graz city center starred under this motor on Saturday. Around 50,000 spectators accepted the invitation and enjoyed among other things the demonstration runs by two-time DTM Champion Mattias Ekström in his Red Bull Audi RS 5 DTM. The Red Bull Ring close to Spielberg, around 70 kilometers northwest of Graz, hosts the DTM on August 3.

Felix Baumgartner qualifies for the Nürburgring 24-Hour Race

The extreme sportsman Felix Baumgartner qualified for the 24-hour race on the Nürburgring with a strong performance. The Austrian, who shared an Audi R8 LMS ultra on the Nordschleife with Marco Werner, Frank Biela and Pierre Kaffer, put in an impeccable performance and achieved some respectable lap times. The two Audi R8 LMS ultra vehicles entered by the Audi race experience team managed to qualify early for the top 30 qualifying session of this classic endurance event held in Germany’s Eifel region. The Audi with start number 502 came eighth in the GT3 category and finished 13th overall.

Even more excitement in the Audi R8 LMS Cup

The Audi R8 LMS Cup intends to deliver even more exciting sports action in the next season. This will be thanks to success-based extra weight and also the push-to-pass button. This button gives the vehicles a brief boost of 50 hp. The event regulations determine how often the drivers are allowed to make use of push to pass in each race. The organisers of the championship held in Asia hope that these innovations will result in more overtaking and new strategic opportunities.

DTM Champions hit the ice

The DTM drivers Mattias Ekström and Timo Scheider met for a unique competition. In the Audi RS 6 Avant the two factory drivers fought a gripping two-way battle on a frozen lake. The quaint town of Arvidsjaur in Sweden offered the perfect terrain for the quattro challenges. As on the race track, the two double DTM Champions didn’t give each other the slightest break on ice and didn’t shy away from metal body contact in their direct duel either. After the narrow victory of Scheider the rivalry among the two friends was forgotten again. You can find the video here: www.youtube.com/audi

Audi Italia to launch design competition

Milestone anniversary: Audi Italia started its motorsport programme in Italy 20 years ago. To mark the occasion, they are launching a design competition. Fans of Audi are invited to design the Audi R8 LMS ultra for the 2014 Italian GT Championship. The design should tie in with the look of the Audi 80 Competition, which sported the Italian tricolour and which won the Italian Super Touring Car Championship in 1994 with Dindo Capello behind the wheel. The winner of the design competition will receive two tickets for the start of the Italian GT Championship in Misano, Italy, on 11 May, plus a guided tour of the pit lane. There are also two tickets for the same event up for grabs for fans who cast a vote in the competition. The closing date for entries is 16 April. For more information, go to www.audi-experience.it .

Rahel Frey remains in ADAC GT Masters

Racing fans in Germany and neighboring countries can look forward to meetings with Rahel Frey again in 2014. The quick Swiss will be competing in an Audi R8 LMS ultra of the Yaco Racing team in the ADAC GT Masters this year. She will be sharing the cockpit at the eight events in Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and the Slovak Republic with Philip Geipel. The former DTM driver is contesting her second consecutive GT season and last year was the first woman to have won a round in the Audi R8 LMS Cup in China.

Audi Sport has three million fans on Facebook

Only six weeks after Audi Sport welcomed the two-millionth fan on its Facebook page, the next milestone has been achieved: On March 31, an amazing three million motorsport fans had clicked the Like Button. Even more important for Audi, though, is the high interaction rate (‘People Talking about This’). About ten percent of the fans, continuously, are active users of the offering and regularly engage in exchanges about the news from Audi Sport. At www.facebook.com/AudiSport , Audi has been providing information about its motorsport programs in the DTM, WEC and in GT racing since May 2011.

A word from ... Nico Müller

You made a strong impression on your debut for Audi Sport Team Rosberg during the DTM tests in Hungary: of all the Audi drivers you completed the most laps and even set the day’s fastest time on Tuesday and were even second fastest overall. How would you sum this up?
“Positive. I felt very comfortable from the very first laps in the Audi RS 5 DTM. It was important for me to see, because I was confronted by a lot of new things. In general, the test in Budapest also went extremely well for Audi, we were able to work through our test program. We now have to make sure we implement everything we’ve learnt throughout the season.”

You drove on consecutive days on Tuesday and Wednesday and completed 277 laps. Was this strenuous?
“The Hungaroring track is physically strenuous, because one corner runs into the next and you only actually have on straight to take a quick breather. The track is also mentally demanding because your concentration level has to be at its maximum for an entire lap. From this point of view strenuous – but in a nice way.”

It was the first test for you in Audi Sport Team Rosberg and together with Jamie Green. How were you welcomed by your new team and by your team mates?
“Very well! I didn’t just feel at home immediately in the car, but also in my team. Working together with my engineer and teams worked exceptionally well. They did a top job, we didn’t have a single technical problem with the car. It was a great start to a hopefully successful season.”

What was the most important discovery you made at the test in Hungary?
“There really is a huge amount of knowledge. I was able to collect so many new impressions. And I need one or two days to full digest everything I learnt. There were so many new things. It’s not so easy to name one specific aspect. But the most important finding was certainly being able to experience how the work in the new team functions. Audi Sport Team Rosberg and Audi Sport are significantly bigger that the teams I have previously driven for. It was impressive to experience this live for the first time.”

Coming up next week

09/04 London (GB), WEC media day with Tom Kristensen
12/04 Nürburgring (D), round 2, VLN Endurance Championship
12/04 Long Beach (USA), round 3, Tudor United SportsCar Championship
13/04 Monza (I), round 1, Blancpain Endurance Series
13/04 Long Beach (USA), round 2, Pirelli World Challenge
13/04 Hockenheim (D), round 1, Spezial Tourenwagen Trophy
