40th Toyota Grand Prix of LB Celebrates 25th Anniversary of Racing For Kids

The weekend of April 11-13 will not only be a celebration of the 40th Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, it will also mark the 25th anniversary year for "Racing for Kids," an organization active in raising money for children’s hospitals throughout the United States.

The organization has been a beneficiary of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach Pro/Celebrity Race since 1991, with more than $2 million donated by Toyota to Memorial Miller Children’s Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Orange County in the name of Racing for Kids. Again this year, Toyota will donate $5,000 in the name of each driver in the 2014 Pro/Celebrity Race to the charity. And, one of the drivers in the race has a special connection to Racing for Kids. He’s Dr. Bill Pinsky, the charity’s founder. Dr. Pinsky will be among the pros and celebrities visiting Miller Children’s Hospital in Long Beach on April 10 -- and this year, he’ll be going as a driver in the Pro/Celebrity race!

On Sat., April 12, Dr. Pinsky will be wheeling a race-prepared Scion FR-S against pro drivers like Al Unser Jr. and Kyle Petty and celebrities such as TV star Eric Braeden and Oscar-winning actor Adrien Brody in the 10-lap dash for charity that takes the green flag at noon.

"I had no idea what it meant to be on the ‘inside’ as an actual driver in the Pro/Celebrity Race," Dr. Pinsky said. "The camaraderie among the drivers - and the competition - is amazing. The amount of seat time over the four days of training for the race has been overwhelming."

A lifelong racing fan, Dr. Pinsky previously competed in the 1998 and 1999 Detroit Grand Prix Dodge Neon Challenge and the 1988-1989 Skip Barber West Coast and East Coast Series. He is currently Executive Vice President and Chief Academic Officer at Ochsner Health System, New Orleans, La., and a Professor at the University of Queensland School of Medicine in Brisbane, Australia.
