Hometown Hero: The Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach is a hometown race for Kimball. The SoCal native will have over 60 friends and family members watching from the stands as he competes on one of his favorite tracks.

Off-Track Advocacy: Following the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, Kimball visited Washington, D.C. with Novo Nordisk to participate in Advocacy Day at the nation’s capital. He spent the day on Capitol Hill meeting with members of Congress from all over the country and speaking with them about the challenges of living with diabetes.

The Family Business: The Kimball family is not only focused on the world of racing. Charlie’s father, Gordon Kimball, runs a 110-acre avocado ranch near Santa Paula, Calif. After growing up on the avocado ranch and trying his hand in the engineering world, Gordon decided to go back to his roots and trade in his fast-paced job in the racing industry to continue the family tradition and grow avocados in Southern California. The ranch is located just a little over an hour away from the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach street circuit.

Charlie Kimball and No. 83 Novo Nordisk Team

Race Rewind: At the season opener in St. Petersburg, the NNCGR team saw difficulties ranging from mechanical issues to less than ideal track conditions throughout the weekend. The No. 83 NovoLog FlexPen car experienced a spin in the last turn of the 1.8-mile temporary street circuit during qualifying, which placed Kimball in the 20th position in the starting lineup for the 110-lap race. Quickly after green flag, Kimball moved up two positions to 18th on lap four and then another spot to 17th on lap 14. Entering the pits for their first pit stop on lap 18, the No. 83 NovoLog FlexPen car received new tires and fuel. On Lap 30 mechanical troubles became apparent as Kimball reported throttle issues that would remain with the car throughout the remaining 80 laps of the race. After the second pit stop for the NNCGR team on lap 46, Kimball reentered the field in the 21st position. A minor incident on lap 75 that consisted of Kimball making contact in turn one did not cause significant damage to the car, but did cost one position placing him back in the 22nd position. After pitting on lap 79 to examine the front wing for damage, the No. 83 NovoLog FlexPen car reentered the field in the 20th position where it would cross the finish line 31 laps later.

Last Time At Long Beach: In the 2013 Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi Racing produced its second-consecutive top-10 qualifying performance for the season, starting the race from ninth position in the No. 83 NovoLog FlexPen car. Kimball showed strength early-on and advanced to eighth-position within the first lap of the 80-lap race. On lap seven, the No. 83 used push-to-pass on a restart and battled its way to sixth. Kimball would hold this position for 20 laps until coming in for his first pit stop of the race for primary tires and a splash of fuel. On lap 30, the No. 83 and No. 98 made contact in the turn eight tire barrier, causing Kimball to pit for a new wing. As a result the team returned to the race one lap down. On lap 56, The No. 83 would make contact with tire barrier in Turn 1, which sent Kimball to the pits for a second time for a new nose and rear bumper, which dropped them to 21st. The No. 83 would eventually cross the finish-line in 21st position, two laps down.

2014 Standing Start Debut: The Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach will feature the first standing start of the 2014 Verizon IndyCar Series season. This will be the first time that a standing start will take place in Long Beach since the final Champ Car World Series race in 2008 and the second time since the Formula One era ended in 1983. The Verizon IndyCar Series debuted the first standing start in the second race of the Toronto doubleheader in the 2013 season. The only other standing start for the 2014 season will take place at the inaugural Grand Prix of Indianapolis on May 10.

Moving On Up: In the 10 street course races on the 2013 schedule, Kimball finished eight of those in a higher position than where he qualified. He made his biggest jumps through the field in both races of the Chevrolet Indy Dual in Detroit at Belle Isle, moving up 11 spots from the 25th position to the 14th position in the first race of the Belle Isle doubleheader. He then matched his 11-spot effort with even better results in the second race of the Belle Isle doubleheader by moving from 18th to seventh.

Kimball, On The Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach: “The Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi Racing team is working hard to bounce back from a very educational first race at St. Petersburg and I know that the No. 83 NovoLog FlexPen car will be much quicker in Long Beach. I’m really excited to see the Chevy power through the streets of Long Beach and to see what we can do there as a team. It’s always exciting to go back to the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach as a competitor, because I spent so many years attending the race with my father as a spectator. It’s just a special feeling to be back in my home state of California and to be supported by so many of my friends and family. This race holds so much prestige and tradition and I’m just happy that I get to be a part of it.”
